Chapter 20 - The Midnight Intruder’s True Face

"Don't listen to him, Chloe," a smooth, baritone voice purred from the shadows beneath the grand staircase.
Julian Vance stepped into the candlelight.
He wasn't in handcuffs. He wasn't in custody. He held a silenced semi-automatic pistol leveled straight at Arthur’s heart.
"Julian," Marcus growled, raising his rifle, but Julian calmly tapped the screen of a remote detonator strapped to his forearm.
"Lower the weapons, Marcus," Julian said pleasantly. "The subterranean gas lines beneath this house have been rigged with thermite charges since 8:00 PM. If my finger leaves this pressure switch, this entire mountain goes up in flames. Lily, Chloe, Arthur... all of us."
Chloe’s head snapped toward Julian. "Father? What are you talking about? You said we were just going to force Arthur to sign the power of attorney. You said no one was going to die tonight."
Julian let out a cold, sharp laugh that cut through the thunder outside.
"Oh, my sweet, naive girl," Julian murmured, stepping closer to the stairs. "Did you really think I was going to leave a surviving heir? Rachel’s daughter... whether named Lily or Chloe... is a legal landmine. As long as either of you breathe, the Vance blood trust remains tied to Arthur’s direct lineage."
The color drained completely from Chloe’s face. The utility knife slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the marble steps.
"You told me... you told me I was your daughter," Chloe whispered, her voice shattering into a child’s broken whimper.
"You were a weapon, Chloe," Julian said, his eyes empty of any human warmth. "I took you from that Swiss clinic so that if Rachel ever defied me, I could use you to destroy her. Daniel was too stupid to handle the girl. Victoria was too psychotic. But you... you were perfect. You drove Rachel into the ravine thinking you were avenging yourself."
Lily let out a muffled scream behind the tape, throwing her weight against the wooden chair, desperately trying to shield Chloe.
Outside, a blinding bolt of lightning tore across the sky, illuminating the foyer in brilliant, stark white.
In that split second of light, Julian raised his silenced weapon—not toward Arthur, but directly at Chloe’s forehead.
"Thank you for digging up the key, my dear," Julian smiled, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Now, let’s close the Vance estate for good."
A deafening gunshot cracked through the mansion—but it didn't come from Julian’s gun.
From the top of the darkened gallery above the foyer, a shadow moved. A second bullet shattered the chandelier overhead, sending tons of glittering crystal crashing down between them in a shower of sparks and blood.

As the foyer plunged into darkness and the sound of frantic struggle erupted in the rain, a strange, raspy voice hissed from the shadows:
*"Nobody touches Rachel's daughters."*
