Chapter 13 - The Silent Beneficiary

The top floor of the Vance & Sterling tower in downtown Seattle was an ivory tower of silence. By 9:00 PM, the glass-and-steel skyscraper was normally empty, but tonight, the executive suite was blazing with cold fluorescent light.
Arthur stepped out of the private elevator, Marcus hovering an inch behind him with a hand resting inside his tailored coat over his concealed firearm. Lily remained secured in the armored suburban below under heavy guard.
The glass doors to the corner office swung open. Behind a monolithic desk of polished obsidian sat Julian Vance. He looked immaculate in a three-piece charcoal suit, sipping twenty-year-old scotch from a crystal tumbler. He didn’t flinch when Arthur entered, nor did he look surprised.
"I expected you an hour ago, brother," Julian said smoothly, setting his glass down with a soft *clink*.
"Where is it, Julian?" Arthur’s voice was venomous. "What was in the box beneath Rachel’s roses?"
Julian leaned back in his leather chair, a slow, pitying smile playing on his lips. "You always were blinded by emotion, Arthur. You thought Rachel was an innocent angel. You thought Daniel was just a degenerate gambler who married her for money and turned vicious when the cash ran out. You never bothered to ask *why* Daniel was so desperate."
Julian opened the center drawer of his desk and pulled out a leather-bound ledger, tossing it onto the dark stone surface.
"Three weeks before her fatal drive down Route 9," Julian explained, "Rachel audited the family offshore trusts. She discovered that over forty million dollars had been siphoned through dummy shell corporations in the Caymans. She thought Daniel was embezzling it. She didn't realize... Daniel was just the cutout. He owed thirty million to cartels in Macau. I bought his debts. I owned him body, soul, and signature."
Arthur felt the air leave his lungs. "You... you funded him? You let that monster lock your own niece’s child in a cellar with a dog chain around her neck?!"
"I didn't care about the girl!" Julian snapped, his voice suddenly sharp as a scalpel. "The girl was Daniel’s leverage to keep you from digging! Daniel went rogue with his sadism—that trashy little stepmother Victoria got a thrill out of humiliating a billionaire’s granddaughter. But Rachel had hidden the ledger! The master drive with the account codes to Vault 33. The key was under the roses."
Julian tapped his breast pocket. "And now, Arthur, I have the key. And by tomorrow morning, the Vance empire won't belong to you or that traumatized little brat. It belongs to the rightful heir."
Arthur stepped forward, his knuckles white around his brass cane. "Rightful heir? Rachel was my only child!"

Julian chuckled, a dry, rattling sound. "Rachel was your daughter, yes. But she wasn't Daniel's first wife. And Lily isn't the only child Daniel fathered."
