Chapter 19 - Betrayal in the Safe Room

The sky over the Vance estate had turned the color of bruised slate. A torrential downpour was tearing the yellow petals from the remaining rosebushes, washing the loose mud across the stone pathways.

The armored SUV roared through the shattered iron gates, tires screeching against the wet gravel. Arthur slammed the door open before the vehicle had even completely stopped, rain soaking his wool overcoat instantly.

Marcus and his tactical team poured out, rifles raised, advancing across the courtyard.

Two Vance security guards lay incapacitated near the front fountain, zip-tied and unconscious from stun batons. Chloe hadn't needed lethal force to breach the perimeter—she had walked in through the front gate smiling, carrying dinner, trusted by every man on the payroll.

Arthur pushed through the double front doors into the grand foyer.

The mansion was pitch black, save for dozens of flickering candles placed along the spiral staircase. The wax dripped onto the marble like melting bone.

At the top of the landing sat Lily.

She was bound to a heavy wooden chair, a piece of industrial duct tape covering her mouth. Her eyes were wide with terror, tears carving clean paths through the soot and dust on her cheeks.

Standing behind her, holding a gleaming stainless-steel utility blade against Lily’s jugular vein, was Chloe.

Chloe was dressed in an elegant black trench coat, her hair slicked back by the rain. In her left hand, she held the very thing Lily had buried forty-eight hours ago: the thick, rusted link of the iron chain.

"Step back, Uncle Arthur," Chloe called out, her voice echoing in the cavernous hall. "Or I finish what Victoria was too weak to do."

"Chloe, look at her!" Arthur pleaded, dropping his brass cane and taking a step forward with empty hands. "Look at her eyes! Look in a mirror! You have the exact same eyes! Rachel didn't abandon you! Julian stole you from the clinic in Zurich!"

Chloe’s jaw tightened. "Shut up! You gave me away because I was born with a deformed hip! You told Julian to discard me so the Vance bloodline looked flawless to Wall Street!"

"That’s Julian’s poison!" Arthur shouted, his voice cracking with agony. "I was told you were dead! I buried a child’s coffin in the Alps that Julian filled with sand! Look at the safe-deposit box records from Vault 33! Rachel kept your ultrasound in her personal lockbox! She spent twelve years searching for you!"

Chloe’s hand trembled slightly. The blade wavered against Lily’s throat.

For a fraction of a second, confusion and doubt flickered across Chloe’s icy green eyes. She looked down at Lily’s face—the high cheekbones, the faint birthmark near the hairline, the identical shape of their lips.
