Chapter 12 - The Rose Garden Unearthed

Arthur didn’t wait for Marcus. Adrenaline, fierce and ancient, surged through his seventy-year-old veins. Grabbing a heavy antique walking stick lined with solid brass, he barreled through the French doors into the biting dusk.

The manicured garden, which hours earlier had smelled of fresh earth and blooming petals, was in ruins.

The oldest yellow rosebush—the one Rachel had planted with her own hands when Lily was five, the very bush beneath which Lily had buried the severed iron chain—had been ripped from the earth. Dark loamy soil was scattered wildly across the white limestone patio.

Marcus drew his sidearm, scanning the thick tree line where the dense oak woods bordered the Vance estate. "Perimeter breached at Sector 4," Marcus barked into his shoulder mic. "Lock down the main gates! Deploy the hounds now!"

Arthur knelt slowly by the ruined earth. His breathing came in ragged, wheezing gasps.

The small wooden box containing the iron link was gone. But whoever had ripped the earth open hadn't stopped there. Two feet below where Lily had buried the chain lay the shattered remnants of a rusted iron lockbox that Arthur had never seen before.

It had been pry-barred open with a crowbar. Inside lay only shredded black velvet lining and a single, freshly dropped business card.

Arthur reached out with a trembling hand and picked up the card. It was pristine, completely untouched by the dirt around it.

Printed in elegant gold embossed script was a name:

*JULIAN VANCE, ESQ. — SENIOR PARTNER, VANCE & STERLING ASSET MANAGEMENT.*

Julian. Arthur’s younger brother. The quiet, dignified financial genius who had managed the family fortune for four decades, the man who had wept at Rachel’s funeral and held Arthur’s shoulder when the police declared her crash an accident.

"Grandpa?"

Arthur spun around. Lily had crept to the edge of the patio, wrapping her small arms tightly around her chest. Her eyes were locked onto the deep, bleeding hole in the garden.

"They took Mama’s box," Lily whispered, her eyes wide with a horrifying realization. "She told me... the night before she went on the highway... she told me if she ever had to go away on a long trip, I should look under the yellow roses when I turned eighteen. She said there was a brass key that could buy my freedom."

Arthur’s world tilted on its axis. Rachel had known. Long before the brake lines were tampered with, long before Daniel showed his monstrous true colors, Rachel knew someone was coming for her life.

"Marcus," Arthur roared, his voice cutting through the rising wind like a thunderclap. "Get the armored transport. We’re going to Julian’s office right now. And bring every weapon you have."
