Chapter 23 - The Devil’s Bargain

“We can’t outrun them on foot with Lily,” Grace said, her panic giving way to a cold, ferocious resolve. The weeping victim was gone; in her place stood a mother whose child was about to be ripped from her arms. “Where do we go, Nathan? If Elena has federal warrants and private armies, nowhere in this country is safe.”
Nathan looked at the open tactical locker. Beneath the passports lay an old, matte-gold key card and a thumb drive bearing an embossed crest: the seal of the Sinclair Family Vault.
Nathan picked it up. His eyes darkened.
“There is one person who has more reason to destroy Elena than we do,” Nathan said.
Grace stared at him. “Who?”
“Victoria.”
Grace’s breath caught. “Victoria is in a federal detention center! She tried to kill us!”
“Victoria tried to destroy you because she thought *you* were the threat to her inheritance,” Nathan said, his voice hard as iron. “She never knew Elena was alive. Victoria’s father used Elena to betray his own daughter. If Victoria finds out that Elena played her for a fool, faked her death, and is about to claim the entire fifty-billion-dollar Vance-Sinclair trust...”
“She will tear Elena apart,” Grace finished the thought, the cold genius of the plan sinking in. “Can Victoria do that from behind bars?”
“Victoria Sinclair ran an empire for ten years, Grace. Prison bars don't stop a woman like that; they just make her vindictive.” Nathan pulled out a heavily encrypted military-grade burner tablet from the locker. “I kept one backdoor access into the Sinclair mainframe. Victoria’s private lawyers maintain an emergency encrypted channel for high-level legal plea bargains.”
Nathan booted the device, entering a thirty-two-character cryptographic key. The screen flickered, connecting through five proxy servers before opening a direct, secure visual feed.
A woman appeared on the screen.
Even in an orange federal jumpsuit, without her designer makeup and diamonds, Victoria Sinclair looked lethal. Her sharp cheekbones and cold blue eyes glared through the camera.
“Nathan,” Victoria sneered, her voice laced with venom. “Calling your ex-fiancée from hiding? Are you finally realizing that running off with the help doesn't pay the bills?”
“Shut up and listen, Victoria,” Nathan said, leaning close to the camera. “You think you’re in prison because I beat you. You’re in prison because your father and my father replaced you seven years ago.”
Victoria’s sneer faltered. “What are you talking about?”
Nathan held up the Cygnus dossier to the camera, flipping directly to Elena’s photograph and the Genesis Trust transfer codes.
“Project Cygnus,” Nathan said coldly. “Elena Alvarez is alive. She’s in Manhattan right now, filing the Genesis codes to liquidate every single Sinclair asset you spent your life protecting. By tomorrow noon, your family name will be erased from the registry, and Elena will own every penny your father promised you.”
On the screen, Victoria’s face drained of color. The arrogant sneer vanished, replaced by a monstrous, terrifying rage. The pencil in her hand snapped in half with a sharp crack.
“That... little... lab rat,” Victoria hissed through bared teeth. “She took my trust?”
“She’s taking everything,” Nathan said. “Unless you give me the access codes to your father’s private black-budget armory in Manhattan.”
Victoria leaned forward, her eyes burning into Nathan’s. “If I give you those codes, Nathan... I want one thing.”
“Name it.”

“I want you to make sure Elena Alvarez bleeds out on the floor of my boardroom.”
