Chapter 18 - Ambush at Black Creek Bridge

The deafening crack of a high-caliber sniper round tore through the interior of the vehicle, punching clean through the headrest between Nathan and Grace before embedding itself into the dashboard.

“GET DOWN!” Nathan bellowed, slamming his palm onto Grace’s shoulder and forcing her below the dash.

Lily woke with a terrified shriek, glass raining over her car seat. “Daddy! Mommy!”

“Stay down, baby! Stay on the floor!” Grace screamed, reaching backward blindly, her fingers wrapping around Lily’s ankle to pull her down into the footwell.

Nathan mashed the gas pedal to the floor. The engine roared, tires spitting gravel as the heavy SUV fishtailed violently across the narrow dirt road. Through the shattered rear window, two black, unmarked tactical trucks burst from the treeline behind them, heavy steel brush guards gleaming like predator fangs.

“They aren’t trying to run us off the road,” Nathan said through gritted teeth, glancing at the side mirror. “They’re herding us.”

Ahead of them lay Black Creek Bridge—a narrow, rusted iron-trestle crossing suspended eighty feet above a roaring, boulder-choked river. As the SUV crossed onto the wooden planks, the boards groaned under the weight.

Halfway across, a third black vehicle—a reinforced armored van—swung out from the opposite end of the bridge, blocking the entire roadway with military precision.

They were trapped.

Behind them, the two chase trucks screeched to a halt, boxing the SUV completely onto the iron bridge.

Nathan slammed the brakes. The SUV skidded, stopping inches from the armored van’s bumper. Silence crashed down over the gorge, broken only by Lily’s ragged sobs and the hiss of steam leaking from their cracked radiator.

Six men in full tactical gear stepped out of the blocking van, black assault rifles held at the low-ready position.

“Nathan,” Grace breathed, clutching Lily’s shaking body against her chest. “Nathan, what do we do? Tell me what we do!”

Nathan’s jaw worked. He reached into the glove box, pulling out the Colt .45 he swore he would never carry again. He checked the slide, chambering a round with a mechanical *clack*.

“Grace,” he said softly, looking at her with an intensity that burned. “No matter what happens, you don’t let them touch her. If I drop, you take the wheel, you ram the guardrail on the left, and you drop into the water. The drop isn’t fatal if you hit the deep pool near the bank. Do you hear me?”

“Nathan, no! You can’t fight six of them!”

The lead tactical operative stepped forward. He raised a megaphone to his helmet.

“Nathan Vance! Step out of the vehicle with the child! We have no orders to harm you, but the girl belongs to our client. Step out, or we deploy flash-bangs and take her by force!”

Nathan looked back at his daughter. Lily’s huge, tear-stained eyes stared at him from beneath Grace’s arm. Her small lower lip trembled.

“Daddy,” she whispered, her tiny voice cutting through the ringing in his ears. “Are they bad men?”

Nathan leaned back, kissed her forehead, and whispered, “Not bad enough to take you from me.”

Then he kicked open the driver’s side door.
