Chapter 21 - The Blood Lie

“Elena…” Grace choked out the name, clutching Nathan’s forearms with nails digging through his shirt. “No. No, that’s impossible! Elena died! We held a memorial! There was a coat found by the bridge, a note—”

“There was no body, Grace,” Nathan said, his mind racing through the dark corridors of his father’s past machinations. “My father didn't just run hedge funds; he ran private human intelligence networks. He found Elena when she was working as a junior researcher at the Columbia Genetics lab. She was brilliant, she had the rare blood markers, and she was desperate for money to pay for your mother’s cancer treatments.”

The realization hit Grace like a physical blow. She staggered back against the stone fireplace, her eyes wide with horrified clarity.

“The fifty thousand dollars…” Grace gasped, tears cascading down her cheeks. “Seven years ago, fifty thousand dollars mysteriously appeared in my mother’s medical trust account. The hospital said it was an anonymous charitable donation. Two days later... Elena was gone.”

“She didn't drown,” Nathan said, flipping through the medical logs. “She was paid half a million dollars to undergo an ovum harvest in Geneva, surrender all parental claims, and assume a completely new identity abroad. My father used my DNA—taken from a routine corporate health screening—to fertilize the embryo.”

“Then... then how did I end up carrying Lily?” Grace’s voice rose to a frantic, hysterical whisper. “Nathan, I was the one who gave birth to her! I felt her kick! I almost died in that back-alley clinic!”

Nathan turned to the final page of the dossier. Attached was a surveillance report with photos of Grace from five years ago.

“When Elena disappeared, you refused to stop looking for her,” Nathan read, his voice growing darker with every syllable. “You filed missing persons reports. You started asking questions around my father’s shell corporations. You became a liability. So Victoria’s father suggested a horrific solution: instead of killing you and bringing the FBI down on their heads, they brought you into the fold without your knowledge.”

Nathan looked up at Grace, his eyes filled with profound grief. “You went to that private clinic in Manhattan for a simple laparoscopic procedure for your ovarian cysts. They didn't just remove the cysts, Grace. They implanted Elena’s fertilized embryo into your womb.”

Grace slid down against the stones, clutching her stomach as if the old surgical scar had burst open with fresh agony. “They... they turned me into a host... for my own sister’s child?”

“They thought that once you gave birth, they would take the baby and pay you off,” Nathan said, kneeling beside her, gathering her shaking body into his arms. “They never expected you to run. They never expected you to fall off the grid for five years. And they certainly never expected that when I finally tracked you down... I would fall in love with you and Lily.”

Suddenly, the encrypted satellite radio on the table crackled to life with a screech of static.

A woman’s voice—smooth, cultured, and chillingly familiar—spoke through the speaker.

“Grace? Little sister. Stop running. It’s time for the family reunion.”
