Chapter 17 - The Ghost in the Glass Tower

They didn't take the paved interstate. Nathan drove a nondescript, dust-covered four-wheel-drive SUV through the rutted fire roads of upstate New York, his knuckles white against the steering wheel. In the backseat, Lily had fallen asleep with her cheek pressed against her stuffed rabbit, oblivious to the fact that her father had spent the last two hours checking his blind spots every three minutes.

Grace sat in the passenger seat, the black envelope trembling between her fingers. Her face was the color of chalk.

“This is impossible,” she whispered, tears cutting clean tracks through the dust on her face. “I carried her, Nathan. In that basement apartment in Queens while Victoria’s private detectives chased me through subway tunnels. I bled for her. I watched her take her first breath under the fluorescent lights of a charity clinic! How can a paper say I am not her mother?”

“Because paper lies when there's enough money behind it,” Nathan said, his voice flat, dangerously quiet. “Or because the clinic wasn’t what you thought it was.”

Grace turned to him, her eyes wide with mounting panic. “What does that mean?”

“My father died six months ago, Grace. Victoria’s father is serving twenty-five years in federal custody. But they were never the architects. They were the bankers.” Nathan glanced into the rearview mirror, checking the winding dirt trail behind them. “Before my father collapsed in that boardroom, he left an offshore account labeled *The Genesis Covenant*. I thought it was an untraceable slush fund. I didn't care; I left every cent of it to the courts.”

He swallowed, his throat dry as sandpaper. “What if it wasn’t money? What if it was a biological contingency plan?”

Suddenly, Nathan’s burner phone vibrated against the console. It was an encrypted satellite frequency—one known to only three people on earth. Two of them were dead.

Nathan hit speakerphone without taking his eyes off the road. “Speak.”

A distorted, mechanized voice filled the cabin, cold and synthetic.

“Good morning, Mr. Vance. You left Whispering Pines faster than our retrieval team anticipated. But speed won’t change the law. At midnight tonight, an amber alert will be issued for Lily Alvarez. The charge is aggravated parental kidnapping.”

“Who the hell are you?” Nathan snarled, veins pulsing in his temples. “Grace is her mother! I am her father! We have the court rulings, we have the birth certificate—”

“You have forged public records designed by your corrupt father to cover up an unholy corporate merger,” the voice replied coolly. “The true biological mother deposited her ovum under contract in Geneva six years ago. She has just landed at JFK. And unlike Grace, she possesses the legitimate global custody rights signed by the Vance Board of Trustees.”

“I’ll burn the board to the ground,” Nathan roared.

“You already did, Nathan. That’s why she doesn’t want your money. She only wants the child.”

The call cut off with a sharp click.

Before Nathan could speak, the rear window of the SUV exploded in a hail of tempered glass.
