Chapter 5 - THE PLAN TO REMOVE ELENA

Victoria understood one thing clearly.

Elena had to go.

As long as the housekeeper remained near Leo, Victoria could never control the mansion completely.

So she created a theft.

A pair of diamond earrings disappeared from Victoria's dressing room.

Value: forty thousand dollars.

By dinner, Victoria was crying in Mark's study.

"Someone stole them."

Mark frowned.

"Are you sure they're not misplaced?"

"I checked everywhere."

"Security can review the footage."

Victoria hesitated.

Then whispered:

"I didn't want to say anything..."

Mark looked at her.

"But?"

"I saw Elena near my dressing room."

Silence.

Mark's expression changed.

"Elena?"

"I hope I'm wrong."

Victoria touched his hand.

"She has been hostile toward me from the beginning."

Mark called Elena into the study.

She entered calmly.

Victoria avoided her eyes.

Mark explained.

Elena listened.

Then said:

"I didn't take anything."

"I believe you."

Victoria snapped her head toward him.

"Mark."

He held up a hand.

"Elena has worked here for years."

"People change."

"Then we investigate."

Victoria's breathing tightened.

That wasn't the response she expected.

Mark called security.

The next morning, the missing earrings were found.

Not in Elena's room.

In the pocket of an old cleaning apron she hadn't worn in six months.

Too perfect.

Elena looked at the jewelry.

Then at Victoria.

Mark looked uncertain.

Victoria cried.

"How much evidence do you need?"

But the head of security spoke.

"Actually, sir, there's a problem."

Everyone turned.

"That storage room requires electronic key access."

He checked his tablet.

"Elena hasn't entered it in eight months."

Victoria's face changed.

"And who entered last?"

The security chief looked uncomfortable.

"Ms. Vance."

Silence.

Victoria laughed nervously.

"I was looking for something."

Mark stared at her.

The first crack appeared.

Small.

But visible.

Victoria recovered quickly.

"Fine. Maybe I accidentally put them there."

She kissed Mark's cheek.

"Forget it."

But Elena didn't forget.

Neither did Mark.

And Victoria knew it.

May you like

From that day forward, her desperation grew.
