Chapter 15 - THE HOUSE WITHOUT FEAR

Spring came to Sterling Manor.

The lake thawed.

Flowers returned along the eastern gardens.

And one morning, something remarkable happened.

Leo walked into the grand hall alone.

Elena noticed first.

She remained near the doorway.

Mark came down the staircase.

He froze.

Leo was pushing a new wooden train across the same marble floor where everything had happened.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Mark's eyes filled.

Elena whispered:

"Don't make a big deal."

He nodded.

They simply watched.

Leo pushed the train toward the wall.

Stopped.

Turned.

Then laughed.

The sound traveled through the mansion.

Mark covered his mouth.

Elena's eyes filled too.

Leo looked up.

"Daddy!"

Mark crouched.

Leo ran toward him.

Mark caught him.

Elena turned away, wiping her face.

"Elena."

She looked back.

Mark extended one arm.

"Come here."

She hesitated.

Then joined them.

Leo wrapped one arm around each.

Three people kneeling on the marble floor.

No cameras.

No society pages.

No expensive clothes.

Just safety.

That evening Mark called his attorney.

"I want to change Elena's contract."

"Salary increase?"

"That too."

"What role?"

Mark looked through the glass doors at Elena playing with Leo outside.

"Estate director."

Daniel laughed.

"From housekeeper?"

"She's been running this house emotionally for years."

"And financially?"

"She could probably do that better than me."

Mark also established a trust for Elena's mother and younger siblings.

When he told Elena, she became angry.

"I didn't save Leo for money."

"I know."

"Then don't pay me for loving him."

"I'm not."

Mark paused.

"I'm making sure you never have to stay somewhere because you can't afford to leave."

That silenced her.

Because Mark finally understood the difference between generosity and control.
