Chapter 14 - THE TRIAL

The courthouse steps were packed with reporters.
Victoria arrived through the front entrance.
Designer coat.
Dark glasses.
Her father beside her.
Mark entered separately with Daniel.
Elena came through a private entrance.
The prosecution's case was straightforward.
Video.
Medical records.
Employee testimony.
Messages.
Prior behavioral evidence admitted under strict conditions.
Victoria's attorneys attacked Elena instead.
"You disliked Ms. Vance."
"I distrusted her."
"You struck her."
"I pushed her away from Leo."
"You considered Leo family?"
"Yes."
"Yet he isn't your son."
Elena looked toward Mark.
Then Leo's photograph on the evidence screen.
"No."
She turned back.
"But a child doesn't have to belong to you before you protect him."
Several jurors reacted.
Victoria's attorney changed direction.
Then came Mark.
He was asked about the engagement.
The gifts.
The planned wedding.
"Did you love Victoria Vance?"
Mark paused.
"I loved the person I thought she was."
Victoria looked away.
The prosecutor displayed her messages about Leo's trust.
Mark's jaw tightened.
"How did you feel reading those?"
"Guilty."
"Why?"
"Because my son saw the truth before I did."
The courtroom went silent.
During closing arguments, Victoria's defense insisted the incident had been exaggerated.
But the video remained.
No spin could change Leo's expression.
The verdict came after six hours of deliberation.
Victoria was found responsible on multiple charges related to endangering and mistreating the child, while separate civil claims against Elena collapsed.
Victoria stared ahead.
Her father closed his eyes.
Mark felt no triumph.
Only relief.
Outside, reporters shouted questions.
Mark ignored them.
He turned toward Elena.
"It's over."
Elena shook her head gently.
"No."
Mark frowned.
She smiled.
"Now Leo gets to heal."
She was right.
Justice wasn't the ending.

It was permission to begin again.
