Chapter 18 - NOT ANOTHER VICTORIA

When news broke that Mark Sterling was dating his former housekeeper, the headlines were predictable.

Some romantic.

Some cruel.

Victoria's old supporters resurfaced online.

Gold digger.

Opportunist.

Replacement mother.

Elena read three comments before closing the phone.

Mark was furious.

"I can stop this."

"How?"

"Lawyers."

"You can't sue the internet."

"I can try."

Elena laughed.

Then became serious.

"This is the part I knew would happen."

"You don't deserve it."

"Neither did Leo."

She took Mark's hand.

"We survived worse."

Instead of hiding, Elena continued her work.

She expanded Sterling Manor's domestic employee program into a foundation supporting caregivers and household workers facing abuse or exploitation.

Mark funded it.

Elena ran it.

Within eighteen months, it helped hundreds of families.

Public opinion changed slowly.

Not because Elena fought critics.

Because she kept working.

Leo remained her loudest supporter.

At a charity event, a reporter asked him:

"What do you like about Elena?"

Seven-year-old Leo considered the question.

"She makes pancakes."

The room laughed.

Then he added:

"And when I'm scared, she always comes."

Elena looked down.

Mark looked away to hide his tears.

That ten-second clip spread everywhere.

No publicist could have written anything more powerful.

Love wasn't what people claimed in front of cameras.

Love was who came when someone cried.

May you like

Leo had known that long before any adult in the house.
