Chapter 5: The Boardroom Ambush

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering diamonds, tailored tuxedos, and whispered corporate espionage. The annual Vanguard Holdings Gala was the most exclusive event of the year, and tonight, it was supposed to mark the coronation of Julian Croft.

Standing on the grand stage at the front of the room, Julian adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke suit. He looked out at the sea of shareholders and board members, a triumphant, serpentine smile playing on his lips. He was older, his silver hair slicked back, projecting an aura of untouchable power.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian spoke into the microphone, his voice smooth and persuasive. "We have navigated turbulent waters recently. The tragic and... scandalous events surrounding Adrian Vance have cast a shadow over our great company. It is with a heavy heart that I step forward tonight to assume the role of acting CEO, to bring stability back to Vanguard Holdings."

A smattering of applause rippled through the crowd. The board members, many of whom Julian had bribed or blackmailed, nodded in agreement.

"Adrian Vance is unfit to lead," Julian continued, his voice rising with theatrical sorrow. "His personal life is a liability. His judgment is compromised."

"Is that right, Julian?"

The voice cut through the ballroom like a crack of lightning over a PA system. The applause died instantly. The string quartet stopped playing with a discordant screech.

The main double doors of the ballroom were thrown open with violent force.

Adrian walked in, wearing a sharp, midnight-blue suit. He looked immaculate, save for the thin, white bandage over the cut on his cheek—a stark, rugged reminder of the violence he had just survived. On his arm was Elena, breathtaking in a flowing emerald gown that perfectly accentuated her pregnancy, her head held high, radiating absolute queen-like authority.

Flanking them were Marcus and a dozen federal agents, their badges gleaming under the chandeliers.

The crowd parted for them like the Red Sea. The silence in the room was absolute, heavy with shock and impending doom.

Julian’s face drained of color. He gripped the edges of the podium, his knuckles white. "What is the meaning of this? Security! Remove them!"

But the hotel security guards didn't move. They had already been neutralized by Marcus's men.

Adrian and Elena stopped at the base of the stage. Adrian didn't raise his voice, but the acoustic acoustics of the room carried his deadly, quiet tone to every corner. "You made a mistake, Julian. You assumed my wife was just a casualty in your game."

Elena stepped forward, holding up a sleek silver tablet. She tapped a single button.

On the massive projector screens behind the stage, meant to display Vanguard's quarterly earnings, a series of documents flooded the display. Offshore bank statements, wire transfers, audio logs, and the encrypted orders Julian had sent to the mercenaries who attacked their penthouse just hours ago.

"Wire fraud, corporate espionage, and attempted murder," Elena announced, her voice ringing clear and strong. "Julian Croft didn't step in to save this company. He orchestrated a violent coup to steal it. And he used Vanguard funds to pay for the hit on my family."

The ballroom erupted into gasps and furious whispers. The board members who had just applauded Julian now backed away, horrified by the irrefutable evidence displayed in fifty-foot letters.

Julian realized it was over. His empire of lies was crumbling in real-time. The federal agents began moving down the aisles toward the stage, handcuffs ready.

But Julian wasn't going to spend the rest of his life in a federal penitentiary. With a guttural roar of pure rage, he reached into his tuxedo jacket.

"If I go down, you go to hell with me!" Julian screamed, pulling a silver, snub-nosed revolver and aiming it directly at Elena.

A gunshot rings out in the crowded ballroom. Who took the bullet? Experience the heart-stopping finale in the final chapter 6...
