Chapter 2 : The Echoes of the Fall

The sterile, iodine-scented air of the VIP recovery suite at St. Jude’s Medical Center was a jarring contrast to the opulent, blood-chilling chaos of the grand hall. The only sounds in the dimly lit room were the steady, rhythmic beeps of the fetal heart monitor and the rhythmic hum of the air purifier.
Adrian stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the glittering skyline of the city, though his eyes saw nothing of the urban sprawl. His reflection in the glass showed a man on the edge of breaking—his bespoke tuxedo jacket was gone, his white dress shirt sleeves rolled up to the elbows, revealing forearms corded with tension. There were still faint smears of dust on his trousers from where he had knelt on the marble floor.
On the hospital bed, Elena stirred. The IV line taped to the back of her pale hand shifted with a quiet rustle of sheets. Adrian was at her side before she even opened her eyes.
"I'm here," he murmured, his voice a low, gravelly anchor in the terrifying sea of her disorientation. He took her hand, his thumb tracing the delicate bones of her wrist. "I'm right here, El."
Elena’s eyelashes fluttered open. For a terrifying split second, the trauma of the night flashed behind her irises—the feeling of weightlessness, the sickening shove, Vanessa’s cold eyes. She instinctively brought her free hand to her swollen stomach, her breath hitching.
"The baby..." she whispered, her voice cracking.
"Safe," Adrian assured her instantly, leaning down to press a lingering kiss to her temple. "Strong and perfect. The doctors said it’s a miracle, but I know it's just you. You protected him, Elena. You saved our son."
Tears spilled over her lashes, soaking into the pristine white pillowcase. The sheer, overwhelming relief threatened to crush her. "Vanessa... Victor..."
Adrian’s jaw tightened, a dangerous, predatory shadow darkening his features. "In federal custody. Marcus made sure the police had the unedited audio files from your pendant before they even reached the precinct. Victor is currently singing like a canary to save his own skin, and Vanessa is facing attempted murder charges."
Elena swallowed hard, her sharp mind slowly piercing through the fog of the painkillers. She looked up at her husband, tracing the severe lines of his face. She knew Adrian better than anyone in the world. She saw the storm brewing behind his dark eyes. "But it's not over, is it?" she asked softly.
Adrian hesitated, then sighed, sitting on the edge of the bed. "Victor is a coward and an opportunist, Elena. He doesn't have the capital or the tactical intelligence to hack our home's acoustic jammer or buy off my secondary security team. Someone bankrolled him. Someone gave him the codes."
The cold realization washed over Elena, chilling her blood. The dinner party had been a test, a brutal execution ordered by someone much higher up the food chain. Someone who wanted Adrian's empire desperately enough to target his unborn child.
Before she could speak, the heavy oak door of the hospital room swung open. Marcus stepped inside, his massive frame filling the doorway. His tactical suit was gone, replaced by a dark civilian suit, but the lethal aura around him remained.
"Boss," Marcus said, his voice grim. "We just intercepted a wire transfer. Three million dollars was dumped into an offshore account in Victor's name twenty minutes before the dinner party started."
Adrian stood up, his posture rigid. "Who signed the transfer?"
Marcus met Elena's eyes, then looked back at Adrian. "It was routed through a shell corporation in the Cayman Islands, but the parent company belongs to Julian Croft."
Elena gasped. Julian Croft. Adrian's ruthless former mentor and current rival, a man who had sworn to destroy the family after Adrian bought out his shares five years ago.
Adrian’s hands curled into fists, his knuckles turning stark white. The love in his eyes was replaced by an icy, absolute wrath. "Double the guard outside this door," Adrian commanded. "No one gets on this floor without my authorization. Not doctors, not nurses."
"Understood," Marcus nodded, turning on his heel.
