Chapter 4: The Midnight Siege

The heavy titanium blast shields slid over the floor-to-ceiling windows with a metallic screech, sealing the penthouse into a crimson-lit vault. Outside, the storming of the building had begun, but inside, time seemed to crawl.
"They’ll use the service shafts," Marcus said over the secure comms link in Adrian's ear. "The elevators are dead, but Julian’s men are equipped with magnetic ascension gear. They're climbing the elevator cables."
"Reroute the internal defense grid to the shafts," Adrian replied coolly, never taking his eyes off the main entrance. "Elena, move to the panic room. Now."
"I'm not leaving you," Elena fired back, her grip on her handgun tightening. Her maternal instincts were screaming at her to hide, to protect the child in her womb, but the fierce loyalty to her husband anchored her to the floor.
"Elena, please," Adrian’s voice cracked, just for a fraction of a second. He turned to look at her, the red emergency lights painting his desperate features. "If I lose you tonight, there is no empire. There is nothing left. Go to the vault."
Seeing the sheer terror in his eyes—a terror he only ever showed for her—broke her resolve. She nodded, stepping backward toward the biometric panel disguised as a bookshelf. She pressed her hand to the scanner. The wall hissed open, revealing a reinforced steel corridor.
Just as she stepped inside, a deafening explosion rocked the penthouse.
The reinforced double doors of the main entrance blew inward, engulfed in a ball of searing orange flame and smoke. The shockwave threw Adrian backward over the glass dining table, shattering it into a million glittering pieces.
"Adrian!" Elena screamed, rushing forward, but the vault protocol had engaged. The heavy steel door began to slide shut, locking her inside the impenetrable panic room. Through the narrowing gap, she saw three heavily armed mercenaries in tactical gear step through the smoke, their laser sights cutting through the dust, searching for targets.
Adrian rolled over the debris, a shard of glass cutting a jagged line across his cheek. He didn't hesitate. Before the mercenaries could acquire their targets, Adrian fired three rapid shots in the dark. Two men dropped instantly.
From inside the vault, Elena watched the monitors light up. The panic room was a central command center, giving her access to every camera in the penthouse. She saw Marcus engaging a second squad in the east wing, moving with brutal, lethal efficiency.
But her eyes were fixed on Adrian. He was pinned behind the marble kitchen island, returning fire as more mercenaries poured through the breached doors. He was outgunned, and they were advancing.
Elena’s fingers flew across the control console. She wasn't helpless. She hacked into the penthouse's environmental controls, a system Julian's men hadn't anticipated.
"You want to play in the dark?" Elena whispered to herself, her eyes cold.
She slammed her hand down on the master override.
Instantly, the penthouse’s fire suppression system activated, but instead of water, it released a thick, blinding cloud of halon gas and high-pressure steam. The mercenaries were blinded, their thermal goggles useless in the chaotic temperature shifts.
Adrian used the distraction. Moving like a phantom in the fog, he eliminated the remaining threats with ruthless precision. The gunshots echoed like thunder, then faded into a heavy, suffocating silence.
Through the comms, Adrian’s voice crackled, breathless but steady. "Clear. Marcus, status?"
"East wing is clear, boss. But one of them had a data pad. Julian wasn't just trying to kill you. He was uploading a virus to our mainframe to wipe out the company’s offshore holdings."

Elena, watching from the vault, zoomed in on the data pad on Marcus's screen. Her blood ran cold as she read the upload destination. "Adrian," she said through the intercom, her voice trembling. "Julian isn't at his estate. The IP address... he’s at the annual Board of Directors gala. Tonight. He’s taking over the company publicly while we bleed in the dark."
Julian has orchestrated a masterstroke to steal the empire in front of the world. Will Adrian and Elena make it to the gala in time to turn the tables? Read on in Chapter 5...
