Chapter 35 - The Extraction at Zero Knots

"It's the decryption cipher," Sarah whispered, her fingers hovering millimeters above the glowing burn scar on Noah’s arm. "Evelyn didn't just burn him out of sadism. She used a high-frequency thermal iron to melt the synthetic dermis. She was trying to read the cipher."

"The cipher to what?" Daniel demanded, his knuckles white against the steering yoke as he guided the submersible away from the sinking wreckage.

"The global repositories," Sarah said, turning to look at Daniel with terror in her eyes. "Arthur didn't just develop this in a vacuum. Vance Pharmaceuticals manufactured forty million doses of what the World Health Organization believes is a universal pediatric vaccine for the new respiratory strain. It’s already stocked in distribution hubs in New York, London, Tokyo, and Geneva."

Marcus, the burned technician, leaned forward from the jump seat, his face slack with horror. "The 'Aegis' protocol... Arthur told the board it was an antiviral firewall."

"It isn't an antiviral," Sarah said, her voice shaking violently. "It’s a dormant synthetic pathogen. It sits harmlessly in the lymph nodes of anyone who receives it. But when the master transmission key is broadcast—the sequence written into Noah’s genetic code—the pathogen activates. It causes complete cellular lysis within forty-eight hours."

Daniel’s blood ran cold. "He wanted to hold the entire world hostage."

"Not hostage," Sarah corrected bitterly. "A subscription. Arthur held the only biological patent for the neutralizing enzyme. If you want your child to survive the activation wave, you pay Vance Pharmaceuticals whatever price they demand. Every six months. For the rest of their lives."

Suddenly, the submersible’s passive sonar system shrieked with a high-pitched proximity alert.

*PING.*

*PING.*

"We have high-speed propulsion signatures closing from bearing zero-four-five!" Marcus yelled, pointing at the tactical screen. "Depth two hundred feet! Traveling at forty-five knots!"

"Torpedos?" Daniel snapped.

"No... it's a military-grade diver propulsion vehicle! Two of them!" Marcus tapped the glass. "They launched from a secondary chase boat before the yacht sank! They're matching our course!"

*THUD.*

A heavy metallic impact reverberated through the hull of the submersible.

"They're latching magnetic clamps onto our auxiliary rudder!" Sarah cried out, gripping the instrument panel as the craft shuddered violently. "We're losing directional control!"

Through the external rear-view camera displayed on the pilot monitor, Daniel saw them.

Two divers clad in black combat wet-suits, equipped with closed-circuit rebreathers and high-power underwater cutting torches. But it was the insignia on their helmets that made Daniel’s heart stop: the stylized raven crest of the *Blackwood Maritime Group*—the private security contractor retained by the board of directors of Vance Pharmaceuticals.

Arthur was dead, but the board was already moving to secure the asset.

One of the divers swam directly in front of the rear camera, holding a high-explosive shaped charge. He slammed it against the submersible’s primary oxygen manifold and reached to pull the mechanical arming pin.

"They're not trying to capture us," Daniel realized with terrifying clarity. "Arthur is gone. The board doesn't want the cure. They want Noah dead so the investigation dies with him!"

"Hold on!" Daniel shouted, pulling the submersible’s manual ballast override.

He slammed the twin electric thrusters into maximum reverse.

The four-ton carbon-fiber submersible didn't maneuver like a jet; it shuddered, its twin counter-rotating bronze propellers reversing with a violent, cavitating roar. The massive pressure wave caught the first diver off-guard, dragging him directly into the churning blades.

A cloud of crimson and shredded neoprene exploded across the viewport.

The second diver, panicking, triggered his thruster pack to pull away, but the sudden deceleration threw the magnetic shaped charge loose from the hull. The explosive canister tumbled backward through the prop-wash, sinking toward the seabed.

*BOOM!*

The underwater detonation hit the submersible like a concrete wall.

The glass in the forward viewport cracked with a deafening screech. Systems across the main console flashed red, then went completely dark. The twin electric engines sputtered and died, leaving the submersible drifting in absolute, silent darkness, descending into the freezing black trench of the Atlantic Ocean.

"Main power is dead!" Marcus panicked, his voice high-pitched and hysterical in the pitch-black cockpit. "Life support has three minutes on backup battery! We're sinking past our crush depth!"

In the complete darkness of the cabin, one thing was still glowing.

Noah.

The child was sitting upright in his harness, his eyes wide and completely illuminated with an intense, radiant violet brilliance. The light from his skin was no longer just faint veins—it was a bright, pulsing aura that bathed the interior of the dead submarine in an alien, impossible dawn.

And then, the dead monitors on the console suddenly flickered back to life on their own.
