Chapter 17 - The Signal in the Bone

The room filled rapidly with the acrid stench of burning steel and magnesium. Sparks showered from the edges of the heavy hatch, hissing violently as they hit the concrete floor. The tactical team outside was cutting through the three-inch steel with military precision.

"We can't fight them in here," Cross said, struggling to stand, using a metal shelving unit for support. He opened a wall-mounted console and flipped a series of emergency switches. A secondary set of hydraulic doors at the far end of the archive slowly parted, revealing a dark, inclined tunnel that smelled of damp earth and subterranean river water. "The old bootlegger tunnel. It leads to the riverbank, half a mile south of the estate."

"Cross, look at his arm," Daniel said, his voice laced with dread.

Noah had rolled onto his back on the examination table. Beneath the thin skin of his forearm, precisely where the ladle had burned him months ago, a faint, rhythmic emerald pulse had begun to glow.

The capsule was activating.

"The thermal exposure from the hallway," Cross said, his eyes widening in horror. "Evelyn’s ladle got close enough to trigger the startup sequence. The biometric encryption is initializing. Daniel, if that sequence completes while he’s in proximity to Miller’s tactical receiver, the data will transmit automatically via ultra-wideband signal. Once the transmission is confirmed... they have no reason to keep the boy alive."

Daniel rushed to the table, sweeping Noah into his arms. The child was burning up; a sudden, unnatural fever was radiating from the glowing implant, sweat plastering his fine hair to his forehead. "How do we stop it?" Daniel demanded, shaking Cross’s shoulder. "Tell me how to shut it down!"

"You can't shut it down from the outside!" Cross yelled over the deafening hiss of the thermite cutting torch. "It requires an electromagnetic pulse or an absolute zero freeze! If we freeze the tissue, it aborts the upload!"

Daniel’s eyes darted across the laboratory. In the center of the room stood a pressurized canister of liquid nitrogen used for tissue sample preservation, fitted with a high-pressure brass dispensing nozzle.

"No," Daniel whispered, realizing the madness of the thought. "It will destroy his arm. It could kill him."

"It’s either that or he becomes a corpse in Miller’s bio-waste incinerator!" Cross shouted.

*BOOM!*

The heavy hatch lock gave way. The steel door was kicked inward with a tremendous crash, falling flat against the floor.

Marcus Miller stepped through the smoke, flanked by three heavily armed mercenaries. Miller held a sleek, carbon-fiber tactical case open in his hands; inside, a high-gain antenna was blinking frantically in synchronization with the green pulse glowing beneath Noah’s skin.

"Ninety-two percent synchronization," Miller announced calmly, not even raising a weapon. "Thank you for doing the heavy lifting, Doctor. Evelyn is being treated by our field medic, but she was adamant that I retrieve the child intact."

Miller raised his gaze, locking eyes with Daniel. "Hand him over, Daniel. It’s over. You played the hero for as long as you could. Let the boy fulfill his purpose."

Daniel looked down at his son. Noah looked back up at him through tears, his tiny hand reaching up to touch Daniel’s bloody cheek. "Dada," the boy whispered, his voice tiny, pure, and unbreakable. "Don't go."

Daniel looked back up at Miller. His eyes were cold, dead, and entirely devoid of fear.

"A father doesn't quit," Daniel said softly.

With a lightning-fast motion, Daniel grabbed the liquid nitrogen hose, twisted the master pressure valve wide open, and aimed the nozzle directly into the cluster of mercenaries.
