Chapter 33 - The Sinking Sanctuary

The water was black, frigid, and thick with hydraulic fluid.
Arthur Vance had Evelyn pinned against an auxiliary server rack, his thumbs pressing into her windpipe with murderous intent. Even with a shattered shoulder and a bullet wound, the patriarch’s desperation gave him unnatural leverage. Evelyn’s face was turning purple, her fingers clawing at his wrists, gouging deep ribbons of flesh.
"You will not destroy my empire," Arthur hissed through clenched, bloody teeth. "You are just an echo of your mother. Weak. Defective."
Daniel didn't offer a warning. He surged through the knee-deep brine, grabbed a heavy, discarded chrome carbon-dioxide fire extinguisher from the floor, and swung it like a battering ram.
*CRACK!*
The solid base of the canister collided with the side of Arthur’s skull. The patriarch collapsed sideways into the freezing foam, his eyes rolling back as unconsciousness took him.
Evelyn dropped to hands and knees in the surging water, retching and coughing, gasping for air. She looked up at Daniel, her remaining open eye wide with disbelief. She reached for the discarded pistol floating near her knee, but Daniel stepped hard on her forearm, pinning it to the grated floor with a brutal crunch of cartilage.
"Don't," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a register of chilling, flat authority.
He bent down, hooked his fingers into the gold chain resting against Arthur’s neck, and ripped it free. Suspended from the heavy link was a matte-black titanium keycard marked with the stylized Vance ouroboros and a biometric transponder chip.
"Daniel... please," Evelyn rasped, her voice trembling, stripped of all its manic bravado. "He made me do it. He infected me when I was six years old! The ladle... I wasn't trying to hurt Noah! The beacon was burning him from the inside! I had to cauterize the signal so Arthur couldn't find us!"
"You watched him scream," Daniel whispered, leaning down until his eyes were inches from hers. "You stood in that kitchen, smelled his burning skin, and you smiled. I saw the camera, Evelyn. The red light in the smoke detector recorded everything."
"You don't understand what he put inside that boy!" Evelyn cried, tears cutting pale tracks through the soot on her face. "If Noah lives, millions die! His blood isn't a cure, Daniel! It’s the trigger! Arthur built the disease to sell the cure, but Noah is the weapon!"
A terrifying explosion shook the vessel from beneath their feet. The deck lurch sharply upward, throwing Daniel off Evelyn.
The yacht’s stern was sinking fast, dragging the bow straight into the air like the Titanic. Water was now cascading through the shattered doorway like a torrential waterfall, pouring down from the upper observation decks.
"Daniel!" Sarah screamed from the catwalk above.
She was clutching Noah against her chest with one arm, using her other hand to cling to the yellow industrial ladder leading toward the forward moon pool. Noah was awake now, his eyes glowing with an impossible, eerie violet luminescence that cast strange, dancing shadows against the metal ceiling.
Daniel turned away from Evelyn and sprinted through the rushing floodwaters toward the ladder.
"Daniel! Don't leave me here!" Evelyn screamed behind him, struggling to rise against the rushing torrent. "Daniel!"
Daniel didn't look back. He scaled the industrial ladder three rungs at a time, reaching the catwalk just as a wall of ocean water burst through the lower laboratory viewports, entirely swallowing the lower deck and everyone left on it in a deafening, frothing roar.
"Where is the moon pool?" Daniel shouted over the screaming of tearing steel.
"Through the pressurized maintenance airlock!" Sarah yelled back, her knuckles white on Noah’s back. "Arthur called it the *Nautilus Core*. It's a pressurized deep-sea submersible. It’s hardwired into an emergency ejection tube through the bow!"
They sprinted down the narrow, tilting maintenance corridor. Pipes overhead were bursting, spraying freezing seawater and hydraulic oil. The ship was dying around them, groaning under thousands of tons of hydrostatic pressure.
They reached the heavy airlock door at the end of the hall. Daniel slammed the titanium keycard into the digital reader.
*BEEP-BEEP.*
*ACCESS GRANTED: PATRIARCH LEVEL ONE.*
The pneumatic seals broke with a violent hiss, and the heavy circular hatch swung outward.
Inside sat a sleek, carbon-fiber deep-submergence vehicle, suspended in an open dry-dock bay over the vessel’s forward keel. The digital telemetry monitors on the sub’s hatch were already illuminated in standby green.
"Get in!" Daniel ordered, pushing Sarah toward the open boarding hatch.
Sarah scrambled inside, securing Noah into a padded five-point harness on the passenger seat. Noah’s breathing was shallow, his little chest glowing like a lantern in the dim red interior of the cockpit.
Daniel climbed in behind her, his hand reaching for the pneumatic hatch control.

A bloodied hand suddenly gripped the edge of the steel rim.
