Chapter 32 - The Cryogenic Awakening

The crack of gunfire inside the enclosed laboratory was deafening.

Daniel didn't hesitate. Every paternal instinct honed over twelve months of terror and blood surged through his nervous system. Instead of firing at Evelyn, he dove sideways, using his own muscular torso to shield Noah from the incoming hail of 9mm copper-jacketed rounds.

Bullets chewed through the master control console, sending cascades of blue sparks and molten circuitry raining over Daniel’s shoulders. The console exploded in a shower of shattered monitors, severing the life-support hydraulics that regulated Sarah’s pod.

*CRACK!*

The spiderweb fracture across the acrylic glass gave way entirely under the kinetic impact of stray bullets. Thousands of gallons of amber cryogenic solution erupted into the room like a miniature tidal wave, washing across the steel deck and sweeping Daniel and the crying infant several feet across the slick floor.

Arthur screamed as the freezing chemical wash engulfed his wounded body, dragging him across the grated floor toward the churning ventilation shafts.

Daniel scrambled through the surging fluid, coughing, holding Noah high above the chemical tide. Through the retreating foam, a body landed hard against the steel deck with a wet, breathless thud.

Sarah.

She lay prone, choking violently on the preservation fluid that had sustained her induced coma for thirty-six months. Her fingers, long and delicate, clawed frantically at the grated floor as her lungs fought to draw their first breath of raw, unfiltered air. She convulsed, vomiting fluid, her chest heaving under a paper-thin hospital gown.

"Sarah!" Daniel shouted, crawling toward her on his knees, his weapon lost in the dark floodwaters sloshing across the deck.

Evelyn was reloading. Her hands were shaking with adrenaline and rage, fumbling with a fresh magazine as the deck tilted sharply to the port side. The yacht was sinking. The breach Evelyn had blown in the lower tender bay was drinking hundreds of tons of seawater every second, pulling the aft section of *The Sovereign Patriarch* into the Atlantic abyss.

"Die! Just die, all of you!" Evelyn shrieked, slamming the magazine home with the heel of her hand.

Sarah’s head snapped up. Her amber eyes, clouded with three years of chemical sleep, suddenly widened as they focused on the crying infant in Daniel’s arms.

Something primal, something completely beyond medicine or memory, ignited behind Sarah's gaze. The genetic connection forged in the sterile, horrific laboratories of Vance Pharmaceuticals didn't need words. Sarah recognized the sound of Noah’s voice.

"Noah..." Sarah gasped, her voice nothing more than a ragged, cracked whisper.

Evelyn raised the muzzle toward Sarah’s forehead. "You were always in my way, little sister."

Before Evelyn could squeeze the trigger, a hand shot out from beneath the churning water.

It was Arthur.

The old patriarch, his face pale as death and his custom suit soaked in gore and brine, lunged with the desperate strength of a drowning tyrant. His fingers closed around Evelyn’s ankle, and with a feral, gutter-born snarl, he yanked her legs out from under her.

Evelyn’s head slammed violently against the steel rim of the broken pod. Her weapon fired wildly into the reinforced ceiling, severing a high-pressure hydraulic pipe that hissed out a blinding wall of superheated steam.

"Traitorous whore!" Arthur wheezed, his fingers digging into Evelyn’s flesh like talons. "You were nothing but a failed prototype! An empty womb!"

Evelyn shrieked, thrashing against her father with the viciousness of a caged wolf, driving her steel-toed combat boot into Arthur’s shattered shoulder. The old man screamed, but he refused to let go, dragging her down into the rising water with him in a sickening display of familial hatred.

Daniel seized the opening. He lunged across the deck, grabbed Sarah by the collar of her gown, and hauled her to her feet with one arm while pinning Noah to his chest with the other.

"Daniel?" Sarah looked up at him, her vision clearing through tears and salt. Her hand trembled as she reached out, touching the rough stubble of his jaw, then trailing down to touch Noah’s burning, violet-lit cheek. "It's... it's you. He didn't kill you."

"I'm here," Daniel breathed, the tears burning his eyes. "We have to move right now. The ship is going down!"

A deafening groan echoed from deep within the bowels of the vessel as the main bulkheads began to collapse under the pressure of the ocean. The deck tilted another ten degrees, throwing loose equipment, surgical trays, and metal canisters sliding across the floor into the murky water.

"The auxiliary tender!" Sarah yelled, suddenly leaning her weight into Daniel, her survival instincts cutting through the chemical fog of her mind. "In the forward moon pool! Arthur kept a sub-surface evacuation pod for himself! The access key... it's around his neck!"

Daniel looked back toward the thrashing bodies of Arthur and Evelyn. The water in the room was already up to Daniel’s knees, dark and freezing, smelling of fuel and approaching death.

"Hold Noah," Daniel ordered, transferring the burning child into Sarah’s arms.

The moment Noah felt Sarah’s skin against his, his agonizing screams ceased. The violet light beneath his skin did not extinguish, but it softened, pulsing in harmonious rhythm with Sarah's own heartbeat.

Daniel turned back toward the churning waters where father and daughter were trying to strangle each other to death.
