Chapter 38 - The Titanium Key

"You made one mistake, Vanessa," I said, keeping my eyes locked onto the black muzzle of her pistol.

"I don't make mistakes, David."

"You trusted Julian."

I reached into my pocket, slow and deliberate, and brought out the slim titanium cylinder Julian had given me before he slipped into the river.

Vanessa’s expression flickered. Just for a fraction of a second, the supreme, calculated arrogance on her face vanished, replaced by a flash of raw, vicious panic.

"Where did you get that?" she demanded, the gun rising half an inch.

"Julian pulled it from his boot," I said, taking half a step backward toward the main power breaker on the cellar wall. "He told me what it does. He told me it isn't an encryption key for the offshore accounts. It’s an emergency failsafe for the biometric containment system."

"Don't touch the panel, David," she hissed, her finger taking the slack out of the trigger. "If you turn that key, the atmospheric seals vent. The oxygen scrubbers shut down. She suffocates in three minutes."

"No," I countered, letting a cold, grim smile touch my lips for the first time in fourteen months. "That’s what you told Julian to keep him from using it as leverage. But Julian spent five years auditing military-grade bio-domes for the federal corrections bureau. He knew what this key does."

I slammed the titanium cylinder into the secondary maintenance port next to the main breaker switch and twisted it hard to the right.

*CLACK-WHIRRRRR.*

The emergency klaxons began to scream in high-pitched, deafening shrieks. The harsh white fluorescent lights cut out instantly, plunging the subterranean cellar into pitch-black darkness, illuminated only by the strobing amber glow of the emergency evacuation beacons.

The glass containment cube hissed violently as pneumatic locks disengaged. The front acrylic wall didn't vent—it slid upward into the ceiling with a heavy mechanical roar.

Vanessa cursed, firing two rounds into the shadows where I had been standing.

*Pfft! Pfft!*

The bullets sparked off the granite foundation stones. But I was already moving.

I didn't lunge at Vanessa. I dove low across the concrete floor, hooking my arm around the medical tray and flipping it between us. Scalpels, stainless steel basins, and glass ampoules shattered across the floor in the dark.

Vanessa fired again, the muzzle flash illuminating her face—teeth bared like a cornered wolf. The round punched through the rolling tray, nicking my bicep, but the momentum was mine.

I tackled her at the waist.

We slammed into the stone wall of the foundation. The SIG Sauer flew from her grip, skittering across the floor into the shadows. Vanessa didn't fight like a socialite; she fought like a trained operative, driving her heel into my injured knee, bringing an elbow violently across my jaw. Blood filled my mouth, but I didn't let go.

I grabbed her wrists, pinning her against the weeping stones, using every ounce of my weight to immobilize her.

"It’s over, Vanessa!" I roared in her face over the shrieking alarm.

"It’s never over!" she spat, blood flecking her lips as she bucked against my grip. "Look behind you, David!"

Through the flashing amber light, a shadow moved at the base of the wooden cellar stairs.
