Chapter 37 - The Fourteen-Month Lie

The room seemed to tilt beneath my boots. Every memory, every kiss, every quiet conversation over dinner for the last six years shattered into a thousand jagged shards of glass in my mind.

"Vanessa," I whispered. "Vanessa died in Zurich seven years ago. The car crash off the viaduct. Claire identified the body."

"Claire lied," the woman—Vanessa—said, setting her coffee mug on top of a stainless-steel medical tray. "Claire was always the soft one. The moral one. She had eighty million dollars sitting in a blind trust she refused to touch because she thought our grandfather made his fortune through illicit arms contracts. She was going to dissolve the trust. She was going to donate every single cent to international charities and leave both of us penniless."

She walked toward the glass partition, tapping the barrel of her pistol against the clear acrylic. Inside, the woman on the bed stirred slightly, a low groan escaping past the plastic oxygen mask.

"I couldn't allow that," Vanessa continued, her voice flat, clinical, entirely devoid of remorse. "So I came home. But our grandfather’s trust had a trigger clause: Claire had to be married and reside within New York State for five consecutive years to claim the principal, or the money reverted to the state general fund. Claire refused to marry Marcus Hale. So I made a suggestion. I told her to find someone safe. Someone boring. An honorable, wounded military veteran with zero political ambition and a predictable sense of duty."

She pointed the gun directly at my forehead.

"She found you, David. She actually fell in love with you. She thought she could live a quiet, suburban life in Westchester, collect the dividends, and keep me paid off in the shadows. But Claire didn't have the stomach for the end game."

"The drawer," I rasped, pieces of the puzzle violently snapping into place. "The drawer in my study. Noah found the lock."

"Noah was getting curious," Vanessa sighed. "Claire was getting weak. Fourteen months ago, Claire was preparing to tell you everything. She was going to take you to the FBI, confess to identity fraud, and turn over the offshore ledgers Julian had set up for me. I couldn't let her do that. So I dosed her tea with paralytics, put her in the back of the blue sedan, and sent Julian to take the fall."

"You burned an innocent body in that car," I said, my knuckles white against the handle of my knife.

"I burned a Jane Doe from the county morgue with Claire’s dental records surgically inserted into her jaw," Vanessa corrected coolly. "Julian was supposed to flee to Portugal with his twenty-five percent cut. But Julian got greedy. He realized that as long as I kept Claire alive down here in a medically induced coma, I could use her biometric thumbprint to drain the trust accounts monthly. Julian wanted half."

She stepped away from the glass, her eyes narrowing as she centered the red laser dot directly between my eyes.

"Julian is dead. Noah is bleeding out in the car. And you, David... you are about to commit suicide out of grief. The police will find your body right next to your missing wife’s secret medical ward. They will think you kept her prisoner down here all along."
