Chapter 25 - The Frame That Fit Too Well

I stumbled back from the alcove as if the metal box were filled with white-hot coals.

"I didn't put those there," I gasped, the room tilting violently. "Noah... listen to me. This isn't mine. That’s my handwriting, but I swear to God on everything holy, I have never seen those passports in my life."

Noah didn't speak. He didn't yell. The fury had vanished from his eyes, replaced by a hollow, terrifying vacancy—the look of an animal that realized the cage door had been locked from the outside long before it walked inside.

He reached slowly toward his hip. From his belt, he pulled the heavy utility knife he always used for fixing his dirt bike.

"You were the one who hired Marcus Hale," Noah said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "You were the one who told Vanessa she could have Claire's jewelry. That's why you were always late. That's why you were the one who found the phone at Pier 9."

"Noah, stop!" I pleaded, raising both palms toward the ceiling. "Think! If I wanted you dead or out of the way, why would I have broken into Warehouse Nine to pull you out of the crossfire? Why would I have taken a bullet from Elliot’s security team?"

"Because you needed Elliot to take the fall!" Noah roared. "You needed the trial to end so you could take Claire's offshore trust!"

Before I could bridge the gap between us, headlights swept across the living room windows—sharp, blinding halogen beams cutting through the heavy rain outside. Tires crunched aggressively over the gravel. Multiple car doors slammed in rapid succession.

Heavy tactical boots sprinted up the wooden front porch steps.

"Federal agents! Open the door!" a booming voice echoed from the exterior. "David Carter, we have a warrant for your arrest! Step away from the perimeter!"

They weren't county deputies. They weren't the state police investigators who had handled Vanessa's case. These were federal tactical units, moving with coordinated military precision.

Noah looked at the front door, then down at the safe, then at me.

"Did you call them?" I asked him, my voice barely audible above the pelting rain.

"No," Noah whispered, his eyes wide with sudden doubt. "I thought... I thought you did."

The front door imploded inward under the weight of a hydraulic breaching ram.

Flash-bang canisters bounced across the parquet floor. A blinding, deafening detonation ripped through the hallway, followed by a shockwave that blew the antique portraits off the walls. I threw my body over Noah and Lily, driving both of them down into the protective alcove beside the fallen clock, my ears ringing with high-pitched agonized feedback.

Through the white smoke, black-clad operators flooded the room, their weapon-mounted lasers painting the smoke in intersecting gridlines of crimson light.

"Down! On your face! Don't move!"

A combat boot planted itself squarely between my shoulder blades, driving my chest hard into the splintered floorboards. The barrel of an MP5 submachine gun pressed cold against the base of my skull.

"David Carter," a voice announced through a tactical respirator. "You are under arrest for the murder of Claire Carter, federal wire fraud, and treason against the United States Treasury."
