Chapter 32 - The Muzzle Flash in the Fog

The crack of the suppressed round was like a whip cracking inside a tomb.

I didn't flinch. I braced for the sledgehammer impact of 9mm hollow-point tearing through my skull, but the agony didn't come. Instead, a choked, wet scream exploded from the water right beneath my chest.

The bullet hadn't hit me. It had driven straight through Julian’s right shoulder, shattering the collarbone.

Julian’s scream tore through the cavernous rafters of the warehouse as he writhed in the black tide, thrashing against my weight. "You little bastard!" Julian shrieked, his good hand clawing at the muddy bottom. "Claire, kill him! Kill them both!"

"Move, Uncle David!" Noah roared. The flat, robotic facade shattered into raw, desperate adrenaline. Noah dropped the Glock’s sights from Julian’s thrashing body and leveled it directly at Claire. "Move!"

Noah hadn't betrayed me. He had bought me three seconds of confusion.

Claire didn't flinch. Her reaction time was terrifyingly military. The instant she realized Noah had shot Julian instead of me, her SIG Sauer barked twice.

*Pffft. Pffft.*

The first round took Noah in the left thigh. The boy crumpled with a short, stifled gasp, slamming against the rusted iron bollard on the concrete dock. The second round grazed the timber post above my ear, showering my face with razor-sharp splinters of rotted cedar.

I let go of Julian. The fury that erupted through my veins wiped out fourteen months of depression, pills, and paralyzed agony. I surged out of the dark water like a predator, lunging upward onto the concrete lip of the pier, grabbing the rusted iron support chain to haul my soaked body over the edge.

"Noah! Get behind the forklift!" I bellowed.

Claire fired two more rounds into the concrete at my knees, sparks flying into the misty dawn. She wasn't panicking. She was executing a combat retreat, backing toward the corrugated steel side doors of Warehouse Nine.

"You always were too sentimental to die quietly, David," she called out over the sound of rain suddenly pelting the metal roof. "It’s why you’re going to suffer so much more when the federal convoy arrives."

"Claire!" I screamed, scrambling across the wet slick floor, ignoring the burning agony in my scarred ribs.

Through the shattered eastern windows of the warehouse, twin beams of high-intensity halogen lights cut through the fog. The throbbing bass of marine diesel engines vibrated through the floorboards.

Two black tactical Zodiac speedboats were cutting toward the private dock at the end of Pier 9. Men in unmarked combat gear, armed with submachine guns, were standing on the bow lines.

Claire didn't run toward the boats. She backed into the shadow of the steel blast doors, her fingers hitting the wall-mounted keypad. The massive motorized iron shutter began to screech downward.

"The key Noah took from your desk doesn't open a bank vault, David," she said, her voice carrying over the groan of the closing iron door. Her smile returned—the same predatory, beautiful smirk that had haunted my every waking nightmare. "It opens the containment unit beneath the lake house. Go look at what I kept in your basement for fourteen months. If you survive Marcus Hale’s sweep team, that is."

The heavy metal door slammed shut with a concussive boom that shook the concrete floor.

Behind me, the water churned. Julian, trailing a thick ribbon of dark blood, hauled himself onto the ramp with his one functioning arm. He looked like a drowned corpse dragged from the river styx. His eyes met mine—twin eyes, twin hatred, twin despair.

"She played us both, David," Julian wheezed, collapsing onto his stomach, coughing up pink foam. "The Hale Trust... it was never Marcus’s money. It was Claire’s."

From the harbor, the first tactical spotlight hit the broken warehouse windows, blinding us in white, sterile glare.

A voice blasted through a long-range acoustic megaphone:
