Chapter 46 - The Other Registry

The countdown hit twenty-seven minutes.

Nobody breathed normally anymore.

Hale turned toward Adrian.

“You said there were two registries.”

Adrian nodded.

“One public.”

“One hidden.”

“And the hidden one determines the real root.”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

Adrian looked at me.

“With Claire.”

I frowned.

“How?”

He pointed toward my necklace.

I touched it.

The necklace had belonged to my father.

I had worn it since I was nineteen.

Mara stared.

“Take it off.”

I did.

Adrian examined the pendant.

There was a tiny seam I had never noticed.

He twisted it.

The pendant opened.

Inside was a folded strip of metal.

Five engraved words.

ONLY THE DAUGHTER MAY OPEN.

I felt dizzy.

“My father gave this to me.”

“Yes,” Mara said.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

“Because they weren't supposed to know you had it.”

Adrian unfolded the strip.

A series of coordinates appeared.

Bennett looked.

“That's not a location.”

“What is it?”

“A sequence.”

“For what?”

“Biometric access.”

Hale looked at the countdown.

“Can it stop the succession?”

Mara nodded.

“But only if we reach the hidden registry first.”

“Where?”

Mara looked at the coordinates.

Then went completely still.

“It's not somewhere.”

“What?”

“It's someone.”

She looked at me.

“Your father hid the registry inside the identity of the Root Owner.”

I stared.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does if the root isn't a person.”

“What is it?”

Mara glanced at my son.

“The Fourth Heir.”

Everything went silent.

My son was the key.

Not because he was supposed to rule.

Because his existence prevented any adult from legally owning Blackwell.

My father's plan had been to make the system incapable of being inherited.

But Robert had found a way to exploit it.

Hale checked the countdown.

Twenty-one minutes.

“We need your son in front of the registry.”

“No.”

I stood.

“I'm not putting him anywhere near that system.”

“Then Robert wins.”

“Maybe I don't care.”

Mara grabbed my hand.

“You will care when you understand what winning means.”

She leaned close.

“Your son won't become powerful.”

“He'll become property.”

I stared at her.

“That isn't happening.”

“Then we move.”

The farmhouse had an underground tunnel.

Bennett led us through it.

Daniel stayed beside me.

He didn't touch me.

He didn't try.

That mattered.

At the end of the tunnel was a hidden room.

A chair.

A biometric console.

A wall covered in old paper files.

My father's handwriting was everywhere.

Adrian moved toward the desk.

“Found it.”

A photograph.

My father.

And another man.

Robert.

They were standing together twenty years earlier.

But Robert looked younger.

And beside him was someone else.

My grandfather.

I stared.

“Robert worked for my grandfather?”

Mara said nothing.

I looked at her.

“Answer me.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Before your father was born.”

That revelation landed hard.

“My grandfather built Blackwell.”

“No.”

Mara's answer was immediate.

“He built the first layer.”

“Then who built the second?”

“Your father.”

“And the third?”

“Robert.”

Adrian shook his head.

“Not exactly.”

He turned the photograph over.

There was a note.

Robert is not the architect.

He is the inheritor of an older design.

My stomach tightened.

“Then who is the architect?”

Nobody answered.

A speaker crackled.

Robert's voice.

“Your family always asks the wrong question.”

I spun around.

“Where is my mother?”

“With me.”

“And my son?”

“Still with you, emotionally speaking.”

“You're sick.”

“No.”

His tone changed.

“I'm practical.”

A second image appeared.

My mother sat in a chair.

My son was sleeping in a portable crib beside her.

She looked at the camera.

“Claire, don't come.”

I stepped toward the monitor.

“Mom?”

Robert placed a hand on her shoulder.

“Tell her.”

Evelyn looked terrified.

“Claire, I took the money.”

“I know.”

“I took your gifts.”

“I know.”

“I took them because your father told me to.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

Her voice broke.

“Because one of the gifts contained a recording.”

“What recording?”

“Your father confessing.”

My heart stopped.

“Confessing to what?”

Before she could answer, Robert shut off the feed.

I turned toward the console.

“What recording?”

Mara said:

“The one your father never wanted Blackwell to hear.”

Hale looked at me.

“Then we find it.”

“How?”

“Your mother had it.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“Had.”

A light on the console turned green.

A compartment opened.

Inside was a tiny digital recorder.

Adrian picked it up.

There was a handwritten label.

FOR CLAIRE, AFTER HER MOTHER IS NO LONGER ALIVE TO EXPLAIN.

I looked at Mara.

“What the hell did my father know?”

Mara whispered:

“Everything.”

I pressed play.

My father's voice filled the room.

“I was not the first person to betray this family.”

He paused.

“I was the first to survive it.”

My skin prickled.

“The Root Owner was never supposed to be human.”

I stared at the recorder.

Then he said the words that made every other mystery suddenly feel small.

“Because my father built the original Blackwell around one secret.”

“The Blackwell family was never the owner.”

“We were the lock.”

The recorder clicked.

The countdown on the monitor changed.

Ten minutes.

Then a new message appeared.

SUCCESSION PREPARATION COMPLETE.

FOURTH HEIR LOCATED.

May you like

I looked at my son.

Robert had found him.
