Chapter 38 - The Fifth

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

I looked at Michael.

“That's impossible.”

“It isn't.”

“I'm not a Blackwell heir.”

Michael shook his head.

“Not by blood.”

My confusion deepened.

“Then how?”

“By designation.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What designation?”

Michael looked at him.

“Custodial heir.”

Adrian frowned.

“That clause was removed.”

“No.”

“It was crossed out.”

“Crossed out isn't removed.”

He pulled a document from his coat.

The paper was yellowed.

Old.

Official.

I recognized my father's handwriting in the margin.

Michael placed it on the table.

The original succession agreement.

Not Eleanor's copy.

Not the version we'd seen in the archive.

The real one.

There were five lines.

Three primary heirs.

One biological heir.

One custodial heir.

The names were partially obscured.

I looked at mine.

CLAIRE WILLIAMS.

My hands began to shake.

“You knew.”

Arthur stepped forward.

“Yes.”

I turned.

“How long?”

“Since you were eighteen.”

I couldn't breathe.

“You let me believe I was nothing.”

“I wanted you outside the system.”

“You used me.”

“Yes.”

“Everyone used me.”

Arthur didn't defend himself.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You keep saying that.”

Michael looked at Adrian.

“She wasn't meant to inherit money.”

“Then what?”

“The authority to terminate the trust.”

Adrian's face changed.

“What?”

Michael nodded.

“Your father designed the fifth position specifically for someone who wasn't genetically dependent on Blackwell.”

I stared at the document.

“Why me?”

“Because you were the one person Eleanor couldn't predict.”

Daniel whispered:

“That means the three-heir system…”

“Can be terminated by Claire.”

I looked at Adrian.

“You said the child was proof.”

“He is.”

“Of what?”

“That you're the custodial heir.”

“How?”

Michael answered:

“Because the child was created using the same authentication sequence used to identify you.”

I felt dizzy.

“I don't understand.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“My DNA was used to create the original signature.”

“And mine?”

“Your DNA completes it.”

“Why?”

“Because your father wanted the system to recognize the person who could destroy it.”

I stared.

“My son is the proof that I'm the one who can terminate Blackwell.”

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

Then I heard something.

A door closing upstairs.

Bennett drew his weapon.

“Someone's here.”

Michael looked toward the stairs.

“He followed us.”

“Who?”

Michael whispered:

“Robert Vale.”

A man appeared at the top of the staircase.

Older.

Gray hair.

Perfect suit.

Calm expression.

Thomas's father.

Robert Vale.

He looked directly at me.

“So.”

His voice was softer than I expected.

“You finally know.”

I stepped forward.

“Where is my son?”

Robert smiled.

“Safe.”

“Give him back.”

“No.”

Daniel raised his weapon.

Robert didn't flinch.

“You don't want to shoot me.”

“Try me.”

Robert sighed.

“This is exactly why Thomas was always the weakest part of the family.”

Thomas stepped out behind him.

Gun raised.

“You don't get to talk about me.”

Robert turned.

“Thomas.”

Thomas's face was full of anger.

“You made me bury my own son.”

Robert's expression barely changed.

“You were never his father.”

Thomas froze.

Adrian looked at him.

“What did he mean?”

Robert looked at Adrian.

“I gave you a name.”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“You didn't give me anything.”

“I gave you life.”

“You destroyed it.”

Robert smiled sadly.

“That's what fathers do when children refuse to understand.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“You're not his father.”

Robert looked at him.

“No.”

The room went still.

Thomas whispered:

“Then who is?”

Robert turned toward me.

I knew before he spoke.

“The child you've been protecting.”

My blood froze.

“No.”

Robert continued.

“Adrian's biological father was your father.”

Adrian staggered.

Arthur closed his eyes.

I looked at him.

“Is that true?”

Arthur nodded.

“My father was Adrian's father.”

Adrian stared at him.

“All these years…”

Arthur whispered:

“I thought Eleanor would kill you.”

Adrian's voice broke.

“You let me believe Robert was my father.”

“I let you believe whatever kept you alive.”

Adrian looked devastated.

Robert smiled.

“Now you understand.”

“No,” Adrian said.

“I understand that you lied.”

Robert shrugged.

“Truth is a luxury.”

I stepped toward him.

“Where is my son?”

Robert's face changed.

“He's with the one person you won't suspect.”

“I've had enough of riddles.”

“You'll know soon.”

I lifted the succession document.

“This makes me the custodial heir.”

“Yes.”

“And I can terminate Blackwell.”

“Yes.”

“Then why aren't you stopping me?”

Robert smiled.

“Because I want you to.”

A chill moved through me.

“Why?”

“Because termination will unlock something.”

“What?”

“The original vault.”

“What original vault?”

Robert looked at Arthur.

“The one your father died trying to protect.”

Arthur whispered:

“It's under the family house.”

My heart stopped.

Robert stepped backward.

“And your son is already there.”

Police rushed into the courthouse.

Robert disappeared through a side door.

Thomas chased him.

Adrian remained beside me.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Claire, we can't go there.”

“Why?”

“Because that's exactly where he wants us.”

I looked at the succession document.

Then at the empty photograph of my son.

“No.”

I folded the paper.

“I'm going.”

Daniel stared at me.

“And I'm coming.”

I looked at him.

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You kept secrets.”

“Yes.”

“But you never stopped protecting our son.”

Daniel's eyes filled.

“No.”

I nodded.

“Then come.”

We left the courthouse.

Neither of us saw Michael step into the shadows behind us.

He pulled out his phone.

And sent one message.

SHE KNOWS ABOUT THE VAULT.

A reply came instantly.

May you like

GOOD.

NOW LET HER OPEN IT.
