Chapter 39 - The Vault Opens

The family house had never felt like a home.
Not after everything I'd learned.
It was a museum of lies.
Every hallway held something hidden.
Every room seemed to have a second purpose.
We arrived just before midnight.
Police surrounded the property.
Bennett checked the grounds.
“No movement.”
Thomas returned alone.
“Robert got away.”
I looked at him.
“How?”
“Tunnel.”
“Where?”
“Under the east garden.”
Of course.
Another tunnel.
Another secret.
I walked through the front door.
My mother had left the lights on.
Her coat was hanging by the stairs.
Her purse sat on the kitchen counter.
A cup of coffee had gone cold beside it.
It felt like she'd simply stepped out.
Except she hadn't.
“Mom?”
Nothing.
I went upstairs.
My son's nursery was still empty.
The white blanket was gone.
I stood there until Daniel touched my shoulder.
“We'll find him.”
I nodded.
“Where's the vault?”
Arthur looked toward the library.
“Behind your father's desk.”
We went inside.
The desk hadn't moved in twenty years.
Arthur lifted the bottom drawer.
There was a false panel.
Underneath was a metal switch.
He hesitated.
“You don't have to do this.”
“Yes.”
“Claire…”
“Open it.”
He turned the switch.
A section of floor shifted.
A staircase appeared.
Bennett looked at the officers.
“Secure the house.”
Then we went down.
At the bottom was a steel vault door.
No scanner.
No combination.
Just a handprint.
Arthur stepped back.
“It's yours.”
I stared.
“Mine?”
“Your father designed it that way.”
I placed my hand against the panel.
Nothing.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Maybe blood.”
I cut my palm with a pocketknife.
Bennett protested.
I ignored him.
I pressed my hand again.
The mechanism clicked.
The door opened.
Inside were shelves.
But not documents.
Photographs.
Hundreds.
Every person in our family.
Every significant moment.
My first birthday.
Natalie's graduation.
Daniel's wedding.
Arthur at twenty.
My mother holding me as a baby.
My father carrying me through the snow.
Then photographs of Adrian.
At seven.
At ten.
At fourteen.
At nineteen.
He'd been watched his entire life.
A file sat in the center.
CLAIRE WILLIAMS.
I opened it.
Medical records.
School records.
Court records.
Bank accounts.
And one photograph.
My father stood beside a young Eleanor.
Between them was an infant.
My breath stopped.
The infant's face had been partially covered.
Arthur stepped closer.
“That's Adrian.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I looked at the next photograph.
Same room.
Same baby.
But now my father was holding him.
Beside him was my mother.
And behind them was another woman.
A woman I had never seen.
Her name was written on the back.
Mara Blackwell.
I looked at Arthur.
“Who is Mara?”
He stared at the photograph.
“She was the original architect of the succession.”
“Not Eleanor?”
“No.”
“Then where is she?”
“Dead.”
“Of course.”
Daniel took another file.
His face changed.
“Claire.”
“What?”
He handed it to me.
It contained hospital records.
My son's embryo transfer.
My name.
Daniel's.
Eleanor's archived genetic sample.
And another name.
Adrian Blackwell.
I stared.
“Adrian's DNA wasn't only used for authentication.”
“No.”
“What was it used for?”
Daniel pointed to a line in the file.
PATERNAL GENETIC SOURCE.
I looked at him.
“That's impossible.”
Daniel swallowed.
“The child is biologically related to Adrian.”
“No.”
“He's your biological son.”
“I know.”
“Daniel…”
He shook his head.
“Look at the sequence.”
I did.
The final line made no sense.
PATERNAL COMPONENT: DANIEL WILLIAMS / ADRIAN BLACKWELL.
I looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?”
“It means…”
He couldn't finish.
Arthur did.
“Your son was created from both.”
Silence.
I took a step back.
“That's not possible.”
“Not naturally.”
“What did they do?”
Daniel stared at the page.
“They used synthetic genetic bridging.”
I felt sick.
“They created a child using two male genetic sources.”
“Yes.”
“And mine.”
“Yes.”
I looked at the photograph of my son.
He wasn't a key.
He wasn't an asset.
He wasn't a specimen.
He was my child.
But someone had built a system around his body before he'd ever opened his eyes.
Tears filled mine.
“I want him back.”
Daniel took my hand.
“We'll get him.”
A sound came from behind the vault.
Click.
The door locked.
Everyone turned.
Bennett rushed forward.
Too late.
The lights came on.
A screen descended from the ceiling.
Robert Vale appeared.
But he wasn't alone.
My mother stood beside him.
And in her arms was my son.
My whole body went cold.
“Mom.”
She looked at me.
“I couldn't stop him.”
Robert smiled.
“She chose correctly.”
“Give me my baby.”
“No.”
Daniel stepped toward the screen.
Robert looked at him.
“Careful.”
Thomas raised his weapon.
“Release the child.”
Robert laughed.
“You still think guns matter.”
Then he turned toward my mother.
“Tell Claire what you haven't told her.”
My mother began shaking.
“Tell me.”
She looked at me.
“I wasn't paid the sixty-eight thousand.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“It wasn't money I received.”
Robert answered.
“It was a debt.”
“What debt?”
My mother whispered:
“I owed Blackwell your life.”
I stared.
Robert continued.
“Your father didn't abandon you.”
My heart stopped.
“He was trying to hide you.”
“From whom?”
He smiled.
“From your biological mother.”
The room went silent.
I looked at my mother.
She stepped forward, crying.
“I didn't give birth to you.”
I couldn't breathe.
“No.”
“I raised you.”
“No.”
“But I wasn't your biological mother.”
Daniel grabbed my arm.
I stared at the screen.
Robert said quietly:
“Your mother died the night you were born.”
I turned toward Arthur.
He was crying.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“And the woman in the photograph?”
Arthur nodded.
“Mara Blackwell.”
My knees weakened.
Robert looked at me.
“You were her daughter.”
The vault seemed to spin.
Mara Blackwell.
The architect of the entire succession system.
My biological mother.
I looked at my son.
Robert held out a document.
“You were never chosen to destroy Blackwell.”
“What then?”
“You were born to inherit it.”
The screen went black.
Then a final line appeared.
ROOT SUCCESSOR CONFIRMED.
CLAIRE WILLIAMS.
I stared.
Daniel whispered:
May you like
“Claire…”
And somewhere behind the vault wall, something began to unlock.
