Chapter 22 - Ethan Cross

The ring nearly broke me.

Not because it proved my husband had lied.

That part was already clear.

It broke me because I had spent years believing I knew the man who wore it.

Every morning.

Every night.

Every difficult conversation.

Every promise.

Every quiet moment when I believed I was safe.

And all along, he had been someone else.

Morales put the ring into an evidence bag.

I couldn't stop looking at it.

“Why would he wear that?”

Arthur shook his head.

“He wouldn't.”

I looked at him.

“You said Ethan was protecting me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why does his ring say Blackwell?”

“It doesn't.”

Morales turned the bag over.

“There's a second engraving.”

I leaned closer.

Under the word BLACKWELL was a set of numbers.

17-04-09.

Evelyn inhaled sharply.

“What?”

She whispered:

“April seventeenth.”

“What's special about that date?”

She looked at Arthur.

“That was the day Ethan was recruited.”

I stared.

“Into what?”

“The organization.”

My blood ran cold.

“You said he was protecting me.”

“He was.”

“And working for them?”

Arthur hesitated.

“Both.”

I felt betrayed all over again.

“You don't get to keep giving me half-truths.”

Arthur looked at me.

“I know.”

“Then tell me everything.”

He was silent.

Finally he said:

“Ethan was sixteen when Blackwell found him.”

“Why?”

“He was involved in a juvenile theft ring.”

Daniel.

No.

Ethan.

Even his name felt strange in my head.

Arthur continued.

“He stole access credentials from a financial company.”

“And Blackwell recruited him.”

“Yes.”

“Why would you trust someone like that?”

“I didn't.”

“What changed?”

“He betrayed Blackwell.”

“To help you?”

“To survive.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Ethan learned what Blackwell was doing.”

“The money.”

“Yes.”

“The forged identities.”

“Yes.”

“The medical records.”

“Yes.”

“The children.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Everything.”

My hands shook.

“And he agreed to marry me?”

Arthur looked at me.

“He was ordered to stay close.”

I felt like I'd been punched.

“Ordered?”

“Yes.”

“By you?”

“No.”

“By Blackwell?”

Arthur nodded.

“They believed you were the weakest link.”

I laughed bitterly.

“I wasn't.”

“No.”

“You were.”

Arthur looked away.

“You were the strongest thing I had.”

The words should have comforted me.

They didn't.

Because I was beginning to understand what my life had been.

A battlefield.

And everyone had been playing roles.

I had just been the only person who hadn't been given a script.

Morales walked toward me.

“We found the vehicle's route.”

“Where?”

“To an old freight terminal.”

“Let's go.”

“You can't.”

“It's my husband.”

“Your husband may be the person we're trying to arrest.”

I looked at him.

“He's also the man they kidnapped.”

Morales hesitated.

Then Arthur spoke.

“She's going.”

Morales frowned.

“Arthur—”

“They took Ethan because he knows where the real Daniel is.”

I looked at my father.

“Do you know?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“The answer is closer than you think.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where?”

He pointed at me.

“Your baby.”

I stopped breathing.

“What?”

“Before Ethan disappeared, he found evidence that Blackwell had transferred something to your child.”

“What thing?”

“A genetic key.”

“To the trust?”

“Yes.”

I looked at my mother.

She turned away.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

“Because Blackwell was waiting for the baby to be born.”

My blood went cold.

“My son.”

Arthur nodded.

“The child isn't just your child.”

“What does that mean?”

“He carries both family lines.”

“Whose?”

“Yours.”

“And Ethan's?”

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

He stared at me.

“Daniel Williams.”

The room went silent.

“My son is related to Daniel?”

Arthur's face tightened.

“Not by blood.”

“Then how?”

“The embryo transfer.”

I stared.

I didn't understand.

Evelyn did.

“Your pregnancy wasn't as simple as you were told.”

My stomach turned.

“What are you saying?”

“Your doctor was part of the network.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“No.”

I stepped back.

“My child is mine.”

“Of course.”

“Then what are you talking about?”

Evelyn looked at the floor.

“Your son was created using genetic material that Blackwell had stolen.”

I couldn't breathe.

“No.”

Arthur reached for me.

I pulled away.

“Don't.”

My voice broke.

“You're telling me someone stole genetic material from our family?”

“Yes.”

“Whose?”

He didn't answer.

I knew.

“Daniel.”

Arthur nodded.

“Then my son…”

“Could activate the succession clause.”

I closed my eyes.

Everything came back.

The message.

THE NEXT THING YOU FIND WILL BE YOUR SON.

Not a threat.

A warning.

They weren't planning to hurt my child.

They needed him.

Because they believed he could unlock something.

Morales received a call.

His face changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“We found the freight terminal.”

“Ethan?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Morales swallowed.

“Someone left a video.”

He turned the phone toward me.

The video began.

A dark room.

A chair.

Ethan sitting with his hands tied.

His face bruised.

A man stood behind him.

The voice was distorted.

“Claire.”

I froze.

“We have something you want.”

Ethan looked directly at the camera.

“Don't come.”

The video ended.

Morales looked at me.

“What do we do?”

I stared at the screen.

Then I remembered the ring.

Blackwell.

17-04-09.

The date Ethan was recruited.

A date that had become a clue.

I turned to Arthur.

“What happened on April seventeenth?”

Arthur didn't answer.

Evelyn did.

“That was the day Daniel Williams was born.”

I felt my blood run cold.

“So Ethan and Daniel were connected from the beginning.”

“No,” Arthur said.

“They were connected afterward.”

“How?”

Arthur looked at my father.

“No.”

I stopped.

“Dad?”

He stared at me.

“The real Daniel Williams…”

His voice cracked.

“…was born with a birthmark shaped like a crescent.”

I looked at Evelyn.

She nodded.

“So does Ethan.”

I stared.

“Then how do you know which one is which?”

Nobody answered.

And for the first time, I understood the real danger.

May you like

Maybe Blackwell hadn't stolen the wrong identity.

Maybe none of us knew who Daniel Williams actually was.
