Chapter 20 - The Red Laser on the Bassinet

A cold, paralyzing terror spread from my fingertips to my spine.
"You knew," I choked out, backing away from him on the wet concrete terrace. "You knew about this blood pact... and you still brought me to this city? You still let me get pregnant?!"
"No! Lena, listen to me!" Dante lunged forward, grabbing my wrists, his eyes wild with desperation. "I spent the last five years trying to buy out the contract! That's why I was working eighty-hour weeks! That's why I became that cold, unfeeling bastard you hated! I wasn't obsessed with money—I was trying to amass enough capital to buy my son's freedom from the cartel! Julianna Vance was an intermediary for the Casiraghi family! That’s why she was in my life! She was the broker!"
The puzzle pieces snapped together with horrifying, tragic clarity.
The late nights. The endless corporate acquisitions. The emotional distance that had broken my heart on our anniversary. He wasn't building an empire out of greed—he was trying to build a fortress large enough to protect our unborn children from the monsters he had sold his youth to.
"And now?" I sobbed, rain soaking through my clothes. "What happens now, Dante?!"
"Now, we fight them," Dante said fiercely, pulling me into his chest. "I have the Sterling empire back. I have the resources of a nation-state. I will burn Europe to the ground before I let anyone touch Mateo or Clara. I swear to you on my life, Lena—"
Suddenly, the encrypted satellite phone in Dante's pocket began to chime—not with a call, but with a high-priority security alert from the private hospital nursery.
Dante pulled it out.
The screen displayed the live security camera feed of Room 412—the locked, guarded room where Mateo and Clara were sleeping.
Outside the door, the two federal marshals were lying face down in pools of dark blood.
Inside the room, the camera feed zoomed in on the twin wooden bassinets.
Resting directly on the tiny white cotton blanket over Mateo’s sleeping chest was a single, trembling, crimson dot.
A sniper's laser.
Beside the crib stood a tall, elegant figure in a charcoal trench coat, holding a silenced pistol in gloved hands. The figure looked directly up into the camera lens, pulled back a sleek black fedora, and smiled.
It wasn't a mercenary.
It was a woman with piercing green eyes, a wicked scar across her cheek, and an antique gold signet ring bearing the crest of the Casiraghi syndicate.
Dante’s phone began to ring. An unknown, international number flashed across the screen.
With hands trembling for the first time in his life, Dante tapped the answer button and put it on speaker.

A chilling, aristocratic European voice whispered through the rain:
*"Seven minutes, Dante Sterling. Bring the boy to the helipad on the roof... or your daughter dies first."*
