Chapter 17 - Dante’s Monster Unleashed

At 8:45 AM, the executive boardroom on the 82nd floor of the Sterling Tower was a cathedral of glass, chrome, and calculated betrayal.

Thirty board members sat around the forty-foot table of polished African mahogany, their faces pale, nervous, and complicit. At the head of the table sat Marcus Sterling, draped in an eight-thousand-dollar charcoal suit, sipping espresso from fine bone china, a stack of transfer documents resting beneath his manicured hands.

"Gentlemen, ladies," Marcus announced smoothly, glancing at his Patek Philippe watch. "It is tragic that my brother Dante succumbed to his madness and died in that terrible fire in Ontario. But Sterling Capital must endure. With Dante gone, and his fugitive wife incapable of providing legitimate lineage, the Sterling-Vance trust passes to me. Let us take the vote."

"Before you vote, Marcus," a voice sliced through the silence, deep, resonant, and chilling as a tombstone. "Perhaps you’d like to ask the dead man for his proxy."

The heavy double doors of the private executive vault behind the podium clicked, hissed with pressurized air, and swung wide open.

Every board member gasped. Two men jumped to their feet, knocking their chairs backward.

Dante Sterling walked into the room.

He wasn't wearing a suit. He wore black tactical gear, his sleeves rolled up to reveal scarred forearms, his eyes burning with an unholy, terrifying brilliance. Behind him, two of Marcus’s elite Blackwood mercenaries lay unconscious on the floor of the vault, their zip-ties glinting in the halogen light.

Marcus froze, the porcelain espresso cup trembling in his fingers. "Dante... That’s impossible. You're dead."

"I was dead the day I let you poison my marriage," Dante said, walking slowly down the length of the mahogany table. Every step of his combat boots sounded like a funeral drum. "I was dead when I let you put your filthy hands on my company. But I crawled out of the grave, brother. And I brought your funeral shroud."

"Security!" Marcus shrieked, backing away from the table. "Shoot him! He’s a federal fugitive!"

Four Blackwood guards raised their weapons, but before they could squeeze a trigger, the boardroom's panoramic smart-glass windows turned pitch black.

The lights cut out.

In the sudden darkness, the sound of breaking bone, suppressed gunfire, and muffled screams tore through the air. Dante moved like a phantom—a predator born in the dark alleys of Chicago, honed by fifteen years of corporate bloodsports.

When the emergency red backup lights flickered on ten seconds later, all four guards were disarmed and bleeding on the carpet. Dante was standing directly behind Marcus, one arm wrapped around his brother's throat in a lethal chokehold, the barrel of a custom Sig Sauer pressed hard against Marcus’s right temple.

"You forged my signature," Dante whispered into Marcus's ear, so quietly only the trembling board members could hear. "You tried to steal my children. You sent killers to burn my wife alive."

"D-Dante... we're brothers..." Marcus choked out, his face turning purple as air was cut from his windpipe. "You wouldn't... not in front of the board..."

"The board?" Dante sneered, looking around at the terrified executives. "The board is going to watch me take everything you love and grind it to dust."

Dante tossed a thumb drive onto the center of the table.

"On that drive are the unencrypted server logs showing Marcus’s payments to the Blackwood Syndicate, the wire transfers to Judge Harrison, and the video recording of Julianna Vance admitting to the setup in Toronto," Dante announced to the room. "You have thirty seconds to vote Marcus out as CEO and reinstate my executive authority. If you don't... the FBI agents waiting in the lobby will receive an unredacted copy of every offshore account each one of you holds in the Caymans."

The boardroom erupted into frantic raising of hands. "Aye! Reinstated! Unanimous!"

Marcus whimpered under the pressure of the gun. "You think you won, Dante? Check your phone. The courtroom hearing started ten minutes ago. Judge Harrison has already issued the order."

Dante didn't flinch. A slow, terrifying smile spread across his lips.

"I didn't send lawyers to the courthouse, Marcus," Dante whispered. "I sent Lena."
