Chapter 16 - The DNA Subpoena and the Stolen Heir

To fight a war in New York, you need an army, and an army requires capital.

By midnight, Dante had activated the ghosts of his past. In the sub-basement of an abandoned rail terminal beneath Grand Central, we met the only man in Manhattan Marcus couldn't buy: Victor Cruz, the former Chief of Special Operations for the NYPD, who now ran an elite private intelligence firm and owed Dante his daughter's life after a medical evacuation five years ago.

"The warrant is live," Cruz warned, laying out city blueprints on an upturned wooden crate. "The press is running Lena's face every twenty minutes. Every cop in the five boroughs has orders to detain her on sight. But Marcus made a critical mistake."

"What mistake?" I asked, wearing a dark baseball cap and an oversized canvas coat, keeping the twins securely bound to my chest in a tactical sling.

"He rushed the paperwork," Cruz said, tapping a document on the crate. "To establish emergency legal standing over the twins without a full custody trial, Marcus filed an affidavit claiming that Dante is legally presumed dead due to the cabin fire, AND he filed a sealed motion questioning the paternity of the children."

Dante’s jaw tightened. "He claimed they aren't mine?"

"He claimed Lena conceived the children during an extramarital affair during your separation," Cruz explained coldly. "He submitted a forged preliminary DNA swab claiming zero genetic match between you and the twins. That allowed him to position himself not just as an uncle, but as the *only* legitimate blood relative eligible to manage the family trust."

"That bastard," I hissed. "I’ve never touched another man in my life."

"He knows that," Dante said, his voice dropping into a register of pure, arctic death. "It was never about truth. It was about creating legal ambiguity long enough to execute the trust succession clause at tomorrow's emergency board meeting. If the board votes to transfer the voting shares to Marcus at 9:00 AM, the transaction is finalized offshore. Even if we prove paternity later, the money and the company will be gone."

"Then we crash the meeting," I said.

Cruz looked at me like I was insane. "Mrs. Sterling, the Sterling Tower is locked down tighter than the Pentagon. Marcus has fifty private Blackwood operatives guarding every entrance, biometric scanners on the executive elevators, and two dozen federal agents waiting in the lobby to arrest Dante the second he steps onto the property."

"Then Dante won't walk through the front door," I said, looking up at the high, vaulted steel girders of the rail tunnel. "He built that tower. He knows the bones of it better than Marcus ever will."

Dante looked at me, a dangerous, dark smile slowly curling the corners of his lips. The ruthlessness that had once terrified me was now our only salvation.

"The maintenance elevator from the old pneumatic delivery tunnel," Dante said, his eyes gleaming with lethal intent. "It connects directly to the private vault behind the boardroom."

"And what about Lena and the babies?" Cruz asked.

"Lena stays with you in the mobile command van," Dante said.

"No," I cut him off, stepping forward until my chest pressed against his. "Marcus needs to see me. He needs to see the mother he tried to destroy. Because while you take the boardroom, Dante... I'm taking the courtroom."
