Chapter 18 - The Hospital Siege

While Dante dismantled the boardroom, my war was being fought in the sterile, fluorescent corridors of New York Presbyterian Hospital.

We had discovered twenty minutes before the raid that Clara had developed a raging fever—a bacterial lung infection triggered by the smoke inhalation during the cabin fire. I couldn't go to the courthouse. My baby was turning blue in my arms.

Disguised as a pediatric nurse, Victor Cruz had smuggled me and the twins into a private emergency wing on the fourth floor. While the medical team frantically hooked Clara up to an oxygen monitor and an IV drip, Cruz stood guard at the double doors.

"Her oxygen saturation is dropping to eighty-eight," the pediatrician said, her hands moving rapidly over Clara’s tiny chest. "We need to administer high-flow oxygen and intravenous antibiotics immediately."

I stood over the plastic bassinet, holding Mateo in one arm while tears burned my cheeks. "Please save her. Please."

Suddenly, the fire alarm throughout the entire hospital began to blare with an ear-splitting shriek. Red strobe lights flashed against the white walls.

The heavy magnetic fire doors at the end of the hall slammed shut.

Cruz drew his weapon instantly. "Mrs. Sterling, we have a breach. Marcus’s secondary team tracked the ambulance Cruz used to transport you."

"They're coming into a hospital?!" I gasped, shielding both bassinets with my body.

"They don't care about collateral damage," Cruz grunted, peering through the small glass window of the fire door. "They have suppressed rifles. Three men moving down the hallway."

The power to the floor cut out. The hum of the medical equipment switched to the shrill, rhythmic beeping of emergency battery backups.

*Clack. Clack. Clack.*

The sound of tactical boots echoed on the linoleum outside our door.

"Get behind the counter!" Cruz barked.

The wood of the door exploded outward as shotgun blasts tore through the lock. Cruz returned fire immediately, dropping the first operative who stepped into the room. But a flashbang grenade was tossed through the doorway.

*BOOM!*

A blinding white light and a concussive shockwave blew through the room. My ears rang with a deafening, high-pitched whine. I fell to the floor, my vision blurring into double images. Through the haze of white smoke, I saw Cruz slumped against the wall, disoriented.

A man dressed in black tactical gear, wearing a ballistic mask, stepped over Cruz’s body. He walked directly toward the bassinet where Clara was hooked to the IV.

He reached down to unclip the baby from the monitors.

Something inside me snapped. The five years of being a passive billionaire's wife, the polite society dinners, the tears, the heartbreak—all of it vanished. What was left was an apex predator fighting for her child.

I lunged from behind the counter, wielding a heavy stainless-steel defibrillator paddle.

With a primal scream, I slammed the heavy metal device into the side of the operative's helmet with all the force in my body. The impact stunned him, knocking him off balance. Before he could recover, I grabbed the heavy surgical scalpel from the emergency tray and drove it deep into the gap between his neck and shoulder armor.

The man screamed, stumbling backward, blood spurting over his black vest. He collapsed against the wall, clutching his neck.

I stood over him, chest heaving, the bloody scalpel gripped in my white-knuckled fist, my eyes wide and feral.

"Touch my children again," I snarled, "and I won't stop at your shoulder."
