Chapter 20 - The Call from Bucharest

The dawn broke cold and grey over the ruined paradise of the Whitmore estate. Emergency medical teams, private contractors, and federal agents crawled across the grounds like ants, hauling away wreckage and securing the perimeter.

The pool water, once a pristine sparkling turquoise, was now charred black at the edges, floating with ash, broken glass, and debris.

Lily lay fast asleep in the back of an ambulance, wrapped in three heated blankets, an IV drip hydrating her small body. Emily sat beside her, never letting go of her tiny hand. Emily’s face was bruised, her clothes torn and soaked with soot, but her gaze was unbroken.

Charles stood on the edge of the ruined pool, wearing a blanket over his soaked shoulders, his hands heavily bandaged from the electrical burns.

Vance walked up beside him, holding a satellite phone that was chiming with an encrypted incoming signal from an unlisted European exchange.

"It’s routed through three bounce servers in Zurich," Vance said quietly. "It's the head of the Voronin syndicate. He wants to speak to the man who killed his extraction team."

Charles took the phone. He pressed the receiver to his ear.

A voice on the other end spoke in cold, aristocratic, accented English—smooth, menacing, and completely devoid of emotion.

"Mr. Whitmore. You are a formidable old man. You electrocuted four of my best men to keep a child that does not share a single drop of your blood."

Charles took a slow, deep breath, his voice echoing across the blackened water of the pool.

"She shares my name," Charles said with absolute finality. "And that makes her more dangerous than your entire syndicate."

The man on the other end chuckled softly—a dry, terrifying sound.

"Perhaps. But while you were defending your pool in California, Mr. Whitmore, you forgot to ask about the other one. The girl who looks exactly like Emily. The girl who has your daughter's green eyes."

Emily looked up from the ambulance, her heart stopping as she saw the color drain from her father’s face.

"What do you want?" Charles growled into the receiver.

"I don't want Lily back anymore, Charles," the voice whispered, each word dropping like poison into the cold morning air. "I want you to bring fifty million dollars in unmarked bearer bonds to Bucharest. And Charles... you must bring Lily with you. If you bring the FBI, if you bring your private army, or if you hesitate for more than forty-eight hours... your real granddaughter will be sold to an auction house in Istanbul where no billionaire can ever find her."

The satellite line clicked dead.

Charles lowered the phone. The morning fog drifted over the ruined pool. Emily stepped out of the ambulance, her eyes locking onto Charles’s face.

"Dad?" Emily whispered, her voice trembling with an impossible terror. "What did he say? Is she alive?"

Charles looked down at his bandaged hands, then looked toward the mountains.

"Pack your bags, Emily," Charles said, his voice dropping into a darkness that shook the very ground beneath them. "We are going to war."
