Chapter 17 - The Fortress on the Cliff

The revelation was a double-edged sword forged in hell. Emily fell back, catching herself against the edge of a marble table.
Two daughters.
One raised in the lap of luxury under the threat of execution.
The other raised in the shadows of an international crime syndicate as an insurance policy against a forty-million-dollar fraud.
"Charles," Vance said from the doorway, his radio crackling with static. "We have a problem."
Charles turned around, his face like carved granite. "Speak."
"Perimeter sensors at the main estate just tripped," Vance said, his face pale under the tactical lights. "A six-man extraction team breached the north perimeter five minutes ago. They aren't trying to hide. They cut the main power grid. Lily is in the safe room with two guards, but they brought industrial thermal lances."
"They're taking Lily back," Emily whispered, the realization hitting her like ice water. "They know we found the vault. They know the clock ran out."
"Call the private air wing," Charles commanded, his voice cold, steady, and devoid of fear. "Tell them to spool the turbines on the Sikorsky at the Santa Monica helipad. And tell the security team at the estate to authorize lethal force. Every single round."
Within minutes, the convoy was tearing down the Pacific Coast Highway at over one hundred miles per hour, sirens hidden behind front grilles wailing against the ocean storm. Emily sat in the front passenger seat of Charles's SUV, checking the magazine of a Glock 19 that Vance had handed her. Her hands were no longer shaking.
"If we lose Lily tonight," Emily said, looking at her father through the rearview mirror, "we lose both of them."

"We will not lose either," Charles said. "Ethan thought money could buy innocence. The Voronins think violence can buy leverage. They forget that before I became a billionaire, I built the supply lines for the Department of Defense. They brought a knife to an artillery duel."
As the convoy turned onto the private mountain road leading to the Whitmore estate, the night sky over the ridge was suddenly illuminated by the blinding flash of an explosion. The iron gates had been breached by high-yield explosives, the stone pillars collapsed across the driveway in a smoking pile of rubble.
