Chapter 16 - The Malibu Interrogation

The rain began to fall in heavy, sheeting curtains along the Pacific Coast Highway as three black SUVs wound their way up the private cliffs of Malibu. Dr. Julian Vance’s residence was a sprawling modernist structure of glass and cantilevered concrete, hanging precariously over the roaring surf below.

Inside, Julian Vance, a seventy-year-old former chief of obstetrics, was pouring himself a glass of vintage scotch when the living room French doors shattered inward.

A flash-bang grenade detonated with a concussive roar, blowing out the remaining windows and sending the doctor sprawling onto his Persian rug, his ears ringing with high-pitched feedback.

Before he could scream, two combat boots pinned his chest to the floor. Charles Whitmore walked through the broken glass, shaking rain from his coat, followed closely by Emily.

"Good evening, Doctor," Charles said quietly, pulling an armchair forward and sitting directly above the terrified physician.

"Whitmore?!" Vance stammered, blood trickling from a cut on his forehead. "What is this? This is home invasion! I’ll call—"

Emily stepped forward. She didn't shout. She didn't hesitate. She took the doctor’s hand from the floor, bent his index finger backward until the joint popped with a sickening crack, and stared down into his agonized eyes.

The doctor screamed in agony, clutching his dislocated finger. "AHHH! ARE YOU INSANE?!"

"You took my baby," Emily whispered, leaning down until her breath brushed his ear. "You declared my flesh and blood dead, took two million dollars from my scumbag husband, and handed me another woman's child like she was a sack of groceries."

Julian Vance’s eyes went wide with pure terror. He recognized the look in Emily’s eyes; it was the look of a mother who had crossed the threshold of humanity into something feral.

"It wasn't my idea!" the doctor wept, cowering against the legs of Charles's chair. "Mercer threatened my family! He had photographs of my offshore accounts! He said if I didn't produce a living baby for the Whitmore estate, he would destroy me!"

"Where is the body?" Emily demanded, her voice cracking. "Where did you bury my real daughter?"

The doctor began to tremble violently. "She... she didn't die, Emily."

The room went dead silent. Outside, the thunder cracked over the Pacific, illuminating the shattered glass across the floor.

Emily froze. Charles leaned forward, his walking stick pressing down into the doctor's collarbone with bone-crushing force. "Repeat that. Very carefully."

"She didn't die!" Vance sobbed. "The baby had severe neonatal distress! Ethan wanted her gone because he thought she would be permanently brain-damaged, and he couldn't use a disabled child to secure the Whitmore trust! But she survived the night! I couldn't incinerate a healthy infant! I couldn't do it!"

"WHERE IS SHE?" Emily screamed, shaking the doctor by the lapels of his robe. "WHERE IS MY DAUGHTER?!"

"The Voronin family!" Vance wept. "They didn't just want their child back... they traded them! The syndicate took your real daughter to Europe as collateral against Ethan's hedge fund debt! Both children are alive! Lily is their blood... and your real daughter is being raised in Romania by the Voronin cartel!"
