Chapter 12 - The Ghost in Cell Block C

The maximum-security wing of Pelican Bay State Prison smelled of industrial bleach, damp concrete, and unwashed dread. Charles Whitmore did not wait for a court clearance or an authorized visitation slot; a single phone call from his private line to the state governor had opened every heavy steel gate within three hours.
Charles walked down the echoing corridor flanked by two tactical corrections officers. He wore no jewelry, no gold watch, only a tailored charcoal coat that swept behind him like the wings of an avenging angel. When the hydraulic door to the interrogation room slid back, Charles saw his former son-in-law.
Ethan Mercer was almost unrecognizable. The impeccably groomed socialite who once wore custom velvet tuxedos and lectured charity galas on ethical investing was now hollowed out. His jawline was bruised, two fingers on his left hand were set crookedly from an amateur splint, and his eyes were sunken pits of frantic paranoia.
"You look like hell, Ethan," Charles said, taking the seat across the metal table with absolute, predatory stillness.
Ethan let out a wet, rattling laugh. "You wore your expensive wool coat into a dungeon, Charles. Still pretending you control the world."
"You made a threat on that tape," Charles replied, leaning forward until their faces were separated by mere inches of cold air. "You brought Lily’s name into your filth again. I swore to you that if you ever spoke her name, I would buy this entire prison system and turn your cell into a sensory deprivation tank until your brain rotted. Do you remember that promise?"
"I didn't threaten her, you arrogant old fool!" Ethan slammed his handcuffed wrists onto the metal table, the chains rattling violently against the steel loops. "I tried to save her from them! Why do you think I dragged her to that pool? Why do you think I hit her in front of a hundred witnesses?"
Charles’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "You hit a seven-year-old girl because you are an insecure, abusive coward."
"I hit her so you would take her!" Ethan’s voice cracked, tears of genuine panic streaming down his bruised cheeks. "Look at the cameras, Charles! Think! I knew you were coming through those French doors. I saw your car pulling down the gravel drive! I knew if I committed an unforgivable act in front of fifty judges, senators, and journalists, your pride would never let me touch her again. I knew you would take custody immediately. I had to make myself a monster so you would become her fortress!"

The sheer absurdity of the claim hung in the air, heavy and poisonous. Charles did not blink. "Why would you need me to protect her from yourself?"
Ethan leaned closer, his chains clinking, his voice dropping into a desperate whisper that bypassed the wall microphones. "Because the men I borrowed the hedge capital from aren't bankers. They are the Syndicate out of Bucharest. And they didn't want my money back, Charles. They wanted the child that was delivered to the Santa Monica clinic seven years ago. The child that had the bloodline of the Romanov trust fund. Lily isn't Emily's baby. Emily’s real baby died twenty minutes after birth. I swapped them to save my company, and now the Russian brokers know she's alive."
