Chapter 30 - THE FALL INTO THE ABYSS

The iron curtain slammed down onto the stage floor with the force of a thunderclap, severing the space between Daniel and Grace just as her pistol fired. The bullet sparked harmlessly against the descending sheet of steel.

*BOOM!*

The fragmentation grenade detonated in the rear corridor, the blast wave shaking the entire structural foundation of the Apollo. Cracks raced up the brick walls like jagged lightning bolts. Above the stage, the massive rigging grid began to groan, steel cables snapping one by one like over-tightened violin strings.

Daniel didn't look back. He sprinted through the ruins of the orchestra pit, leaping over collapsed timbers and shattered masonry, lunging through the main entrance doors just as the C4 charges on the stage pillars detonated in a synchronized, apocalyptic fireball.

The blast blew Daniel off his feet, launching him through the shattered front glass doors of the opera house.

He crashed violently onto the wet asphalt of the alleyway, rolling across the gravel, the concussive heat singeing the back of his coat.

Behind him, the Old Apollo Opera House collapsed inward upon itself in a colossal avalanche of brick, fire, and suffocating gray dust. A plume of black smoke billowed into the rainy midnight sky.

Daniel lay on the wet ground, gasping for air, his ears ringing with a high-pitched, deafening whine. Blood mixed with rainwater streamed down his face.

Through the haze of dust and falling rain, a pair of headlights cut through the gloom.

Miller’s cruiser screeched to a halt at the mouth of the alley. The back door flew open, and Lily stumbled out into the pouring rain.

"Daddy!" she cried, her voice piercing through the ringing in his ears.

Daniel dragged himself up onto his knees. "Lily..."

She ran to him, throwing her small arms around his neck, burying her wet face into his chest. Daniel wrapped his arms around her, squeezing his eyes shut, weeping openly against her trembling shoulder.

"I've got you," Daniel sobbed, kissing her soaked hair over and over. "I've got you, baby. You're safe. It's over. It's finally over."

Miller limped over, holding his wounded shoulder, looking back at the roaring inferno that had swallowed the theater. "The fire department is on the way. Nothing could have survived that collapse, Daniel. Grace is gone."

Daniel looked at the blazing ruins. For the first time in five years, the suffocating weight in his chest began to lift. The ghost was dead. The nightmare was buried beneath ten thousand tons of concrete and fire.

"Let's get her home," Daniel whispered, lifting Lily into his arms.

As Daniel turned toward the cruiser, Lily’s small hand reached up and touched the deep cut on his cheek. Her touch was cold—freezing cold.

Daniel looked down at his daughter.

Lily was not crying.

In the flickering red light of the burning theater, her expression was completely serene. Unnaturally still. Her dark eyes, identical to Grace's, stared directly into Daniel’s soul with an unblinking, chilling depth.

She leaned in close to his ear.

Her breath was warm, but her words turned the blood in Daniel’s veins to solid ice.

"Mommy said to tell you thank you, Daddy," Lily whispered in a voice that was no longer the voice of a child, but a flawless, terrifying mimicry of Grace Sterling. "The fire was the only way to fake her death a second time."

Daniel stopped breathing. His boots froze to the pavement.

Lily smiled—a cold, beautiful, razor-sharp smile that Daniel had seen a thousand times on concert stages across Europe.

She opened her tiny fist, revealing a small, black electronic transponder blinking with a rapid, rhythmic blue light.

"The helicopter is waiting at the docks, Daddy," Lily murmured softly, her fingers gently stroking his collarbone. "And if you try to run... Mommy will detonate the vest under my dress."
