Chapter 25 - THE PRISON CELL EXECUTION

Daniel staggered back against the concrete wall of the vault, his stomach heaving. "She... she was watching us. She was outside our house. Every single day."

Miller swept his flashlight over the corkboards, his jaw clenched so hard the muscles jumped in his cheek. "This isn't an archive, Daniel. This is a laboratory. Look at these documents."

Miller pulled down a series of medical files clipped to the edge of the soundboard. "Neuro-acoustic conditioning. Experimental trials conducted at a private clinic in Bern, Switzerland. Grace wasn't just a pianist. She was funding military-grade psychoacoustic research."

"What does that mean?" Daniel demanded, grabbing the files from Miller's hands.

"It means," Miller said, his voice dropping into a horrified whisper, "she was studying how extreme acoustic frequencies, combined with acute physical trauma, alter the human nervous system. She wasn't just training Lily to play the piano. She was programming her."

Before Daniel could process the words, Miller’s tactical radio crackled to life on his shoulder, hissing with high-priority static.

*“Dispatch to Unit 4-Echo! Miller, do you copy? Urgent traffic!”*

Miller snatched the mic. "Miller here. Go ahead."

*“We have a 10-99 at the County Detention Facility! Prisoner Evelyn Sterling is down. I repeat, Evelyn Sterling is unresponsive in Cell Block D. Medical examiner has pronounced. Foul play suspected!”*

Daniel’s head snapped toward the radio. "Evelyn? She was in maximum security protective custody!"

"How?" Miller barked into the radio. "She was isolated! Who had access to her block?"

*“Shift logs show a civilian visitor presented federal clearance credentials twenty minutes ago. Claimed to be Evelyn’s appellate attorney. Security footage from the sally port was wiped on an automated loop. Miller... the guard found Evelyn slumped over her concrete bench. No marks on the body. But her ears were bleeding, and there was an audio recording device left on the meal tray.”*

"What was playing on the recorder?" Miller asked, a terrifying chill already creeping up his spine.

*“Dispatch says it was a music box recording. Plucking out some classical song. Nocturne something...”*

Daniel didn't wait to hear the rest. He sprinted out of the vault, his boots pounding against the concrete stairs as he bolted back toward the street level.

"Daniel! Stop!" Miller roared, chasing after him into the dim auditorium. "Where the hell are you going?"

"She's cleaning the board!" Daniel yelled back over his shoulder, his voice echoing frantically through the empty, cavernous concert hall. "Julian's locked away! Vance is dead in Zurich! Evelyn was the only person who could testify about what Grace ordered! Grace isn't coming to meet us at the Apollo to talk, Miller! She's eliminating every single person who knows what Lily really is!"

Daniel burst out through the heavy double doors into the freezing night air. Rain had begun to fall, a sharp, icy drizzle that slicked the asphalt.

He pulled out his cell phone, his fingers trembling violently as he dialed the private safe house line where Lily was guarded.

The phone rang once. Twice. Three times.

On the fourth ring, the line clicked open.

There was no greeting. No voice of the federal marshal.

Only the heavy, wet sound of rain falling through an open window, and the soft, innocent humming of a little girl singing a melody in D minor.

"Lily?" Daniel screamed into the phone. "Lily! Answer Daddy!"

"Daddy..." Lily’s voice came through the speaker, strange, dreamy, and utterly detached, as if she were talking in her sleep. "Mommy brought the swallows. She said the cage is open now."

A loud crash echoed in the background—the sound of shattering glass—followed by the flat, muffled *thwip-thwip* of a suppressed firearm.

Then, the cold, smooth voice of Grace Sterling cut through the line:

"You have two hours, Daniel. The Apollo. If you bring a single badge with you, the next thing you catch falling from the ceiling will be your daughter's lifeless body."

May you like

The call terminated.
