Chapter 20 - The Knock at 3:00 AM

The house was placed on absolute lockdown. Forensic specialists from the state crime laboratory had arrived within forty minutes, confirming Daniel’s worst fears: the silver cutlery had been meticulously treated with an odorless, slow-acting thallium derivative designed to absorb through human skin upon handling. A single touch to bare hands would have triggered massive organ failure within forty-eight hours, leaving no detectable trace in standard post-mortem toxicology.

By midnight, the estate was surrounded by state troopers. Inside, Daniel sat by the fireplace with a loaded shotgun across his knees, every sensor on high alert. Sophie had been moved to the fortified basement bunker with Margaret, who refused to sleep, sitting by her granddaughter's cot with Arthur's journal clutched in her lap.

At exactly 3:00 AM, the perimeter sirens did not sound. The motion sensors did not chime.

Instead, the main power grid to the entire county collapsed in a single, simultaneous blackout. The backup generator kicked on with a low roar, but within four seconds, the breaker box erupted in a shower of blue sparks as an electromagnetic pulse swept through the estate’s electrical conduits.

Total darkness fell over the house.

Daniel stood up, cocking the shotgun, his night-vision goggles humming to life. Through the green-tinted lens, he scanned the expansive living room toward the massive French patio doors.

Silence hung heavy, suffocating and absolute.

Then, three slow, measured raps echoed across the heavy oak front door.

*Knock. Knock. Knock.*

Daniel advanced down the hallway, every muscle coiled like a spring. "Step away from the door! I am armed, and the house is surrounded!"

A woman's voice, smooth, aristocratic, and chillingly familiar, spoke through the thick oak panels from the darkness outside:

*"Daniel, darling... do put the gun away. Julian and Vanessa were just the children Arthur hired to distract you. Open the door, nephew. Your mother has held my husband's inheritance long enough."*

May you like

Daniel’s heart stopped. Arthur didn't have an older brother.

Arthur had a sister.
