Chapter 17 - Margaret Faces Her Sister's Ghost

Margaret did not blink. She looked across the crowded ballroom toward table four, where three men in matching catering uniforms stood rigidly near the emergency exits. Daniel had already spotted them; his hand was inside his dinner jacket, resting against the butt of his concealed service weapon.
"Julian," Margaret said quietly, "you always underestimated Arthur. And you have certainly underestimated me."
"Is that your final answer?" Julian’s voice turned brittle. "You would sacrifice five hundred innocents for a stack of paper?"
"No," Margaret said, her lips curving into a calm, enigmatic smile. "I wouldn't sacrifice a single soul. Which is why those three men at table four are already in zip-ties. Take a closer look at their ears, Julian."
Julian’s eyes narrowed. He looked across the room. The men in catering uniforms were not his mercenaries; they were tactical officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, wearing the earpieces of the Department of Homeland Security’s counter-terrorism division. Standing behind them, holding a folder of federal arrest warrants, was Assistant U.S. Attorney Miller—the very prosecutor Margaret had funded through her integrity initiatives.
Julian stiffened, his fingers tightening around the champagne glass until the crystal threatened to shatter. "You think a few federal badges can hold me? I have diplomatic immunity through the Panamanian consulate. Arthur’s original contract was signed under international maritime jurisdiction."
"Arthur’s original contract was voided forty-eight hours ago," a new voice broke in.
Daniel stepped between his mother and Julian, towering over his uncle with the cold authority of an executioner delivering a sentence. "We found the bank vault in Zurich, Julian. We had the Swiss authorities unseal it yesterday morning using the cylinder key Mom wore around her neck. Arthur didn't leave you any bearer bonds. He left an eighty-page sworn confession documenting your arms trafficking, your maritime fraud, and the homicide of the crew members aboard the *St. Jude* in 1983."
Julian’s face finally cracked, revealing the terrified, cornered rat beneath the refined facade. "Arthur lied... Arthur wouldn't betray his own blood!"

"Arthur died trying to protect his family from you," Margaret whispered, leaning in. "And tonight, Julian, his family has finished the job."
