Chapter 16 - The Gala Ambush

The Grand Ballroom of the Metropolitan Museum of Art was an ocean of tuxedos, glittering diamond necklaces, and clinking champagne flutes. The occasion was the annual philanthropic dinner for child welfare, an event sponsored heavily by Margaret’s foundation. Under the shimmering crystal chandeliers, high society mingled with corrupt politicians, oblivious to the invisible war playing out beneath the polished veneer of elegance.

Daniel stood by the marble staircase, dressed in a tailored black tuxedo, his earpiece linked directly to a private security detail he had hired through an elite federal contractor. Sophie was safe, tucked away in an undisclosed safehouse under twenty-four-hour armed guard. But the threat was in this room.

Margaret entered the ballroom wearing an emerald velvet evening gown. Around her neck, in place of diamonds, hung a simple silver chain holding the cylinder key from the Swiss music box. She walked with effortless grace, head held high, commanding the room's respect with every measured step.

At 9:30 PM, a man with silver hair and immaculate posture approached Margaret from the crowd. He held a glass of vintage champagne in one gloved hand. Despite the four decades that had passed, the sharp, aristocratic contours of his face were unmistakably those of Julian Vance.

"You haven't aged a day, Margaret," Julian said softly, his voice carrying the calm, terrifying cadence of an apex predator. "Arthur always did have an eye for enduring quality."

Margaret turned, meeting his icy blue eyes without flinching. "Julian. I’m surprised you dared to show your face in public. I assumed you preferred the dampness of the gutters."

Julian smiled thinly, raising his glass. "A gutter is merely a passage to an ocean, my dear sister-in-law. You've played a magnificent game with Arthur’s trust. Chaining you up at that little suburban house was Vanessa’s clumsy idea—she had no imagination. But tonight, we conclude our business."

"I have nothing that belongs to you," Margaret said.

"You have Arthur’s ledger," Julian whispered, stepping so close she could smell the expensive tobacco on his breath. "And inside that ledger is the signature authority for the Antwerp holdings. You will step into the private gallery with me now, Margaret. Or the three men stationed at table four will detonate a localized charge in the underground parking structure. Five hundred people will die, and your precious foundation will be buried in the rubble."
