Chapter 15 - Daniel Uncovers the Wire Transfer

The answering machine clicked on after the fourth ring. A distorted, gravelly voice echoed through the speaker into the dimly lit study:
*"Margaret. The music box was your warning. Forty-eight hours. The courier will deliver the transfer authorization to the grand gala at the metropolitan museum on Saturday. Sign it, or Daniel’s little daughter Sophie won't make it to her next ballet recital."*
The line went dead.
Daniel’s world stopped. The blood roared in his ears, a crimson tidal wave of adrenaline and primal fury. He reached for his phone to call his ex-wife, his hands shaking with violent intent. "I will hunt him down. I swear to God, I will find him and put a bullet between his eyes before he gets within ten miles of Sophie!"
"Daniel! Stop!" Margaret’s voice cracked across the room like a whip.
Daniel froze, phone in hand, breathing heavily. He looked at his mother. The gentle, grandmotherly matriarch had vanished. In her place stood a woman forged in forty years of quiet resilience, her eyes blazing with cold, tactical brilliance.
"Panic is what they want," Margaret said, stepping between Daniel and the door. "Julian operates on leverage and fear. He used fear against Arthur, he used it against Vanessa, and now he is trying to use it against you. But he made one critical mistake."
"What mistake?" Daniel rasped, struggling to steady his racing pulse.
"He targeted Sophie," Margaret said evenly. "Which means he is desperate. If he had the legal means to seize the trust, he wouldn't need to threaten a child. He doesn't have the codes. He doesn't have the original deed. And most importantly, he doesn't know where the wire transfers originated."
Daniel took a deep breath, forcing his legal mind to override his paternal panic. He sat down at his computer, pulling up his specialized financial discovery software. "If Julian is operating domestically, he has to be funneling capital to grease local palms. Vanessa had high-priced defense lawyers who suddenly withdrew from her appeal last month. Let me check the registry filings for their retainer accounts."
For three hours, Daniel combed through hundreds of offshore wire routings. At 2:15 AM, he hit the wall: a six-figure wire transfer routed from a shell bank in Lichtenstein directly into the campaign fund of the presiding judge who had originally signed the order authorizing Vanessa’s conservatorship hearing five years ago.

"Mom," Daniel whispered, staring at the screen in disbelief. "Julian isn't hiding in the shadows abroad. He bought off the state judiciary. The gala on Saturday isn't just a party—it’s an ambush."
