Chapter 8 - The Fall of Preston Hargrove

Within twenty-four hours, the scandal at the country club had become the lead story across every financial publication in New England.

The Boston Globe ran a front-page headline detailing the multi-million-dollar fraud and the dramatic arrest at the gala.

Photographs of Preston being led away in handcuffs, his navy suit wrinkled and his face covered in shame, went viral online.

In the county jail, Preston was denied bail due to the severe flight risk posed by his hidden offshore shell companies.

The federal prosecutors laid out forty-two distinct counts of financial crimes, carrying a potential sentence of thirty years.

Thomas Sterling, the rival executive who had secretly fathered Sabrina's child, was also brought in for questioning.

Thomas quickly turned state's evidence, testifying that Sabrina had targeted Preston specifically because of his arrogance and gullibility.

"Preston was so desperate to produce a male heir to please his mother that he never even demanded a hospital birth record," Thomas testified.

Every secret meeting, every transferred million, and every forged signature was laid bare before the grand jury.

Meanwhile, Eleanor found herself completely ostracized from the high-society circles she had spent fifty years cultivating.

The country club revoked her lifetime membership following the public brawl and the humiliating non-payment incident.

Her wealthy friends stopped answering her phone calls, and her seat on the historical preservation board was quietly revoked.

She sat alone in the echoing halls of the thirty-room Hargrove estate, surrounded by portraits of ancestors who couldn't comfort her.

Every day, process servers arrived at her front gate, delivering civil lawsuits from investors who had lost funds under Preston's management.

The lavish lifestyle she had lorded over everyone else was crumbling brick by brick, dollar by dollar, before her eyes.

One afternoon, a week after the party, my phone rang with a call from the Massachusetts Department of Correction.

It was Preston, begging for a five-minute conversation from the jailhouse payphone.

I pressed the speaker button so Willa and my father could hear whatever desperate lies he had left to offer.

"Audrey... please, you have to talk to the federal prosecutor, you have to drop the corporate complaint!" Preston sobbed through the static.

"I will give you everything, I will sign the house over to you, I will sign full custody of Willa, just don't let them send me to prison!"

I listened to the pathetic whining of the man who had tried to throw my daughter and me into the street without a dime.

"You don't have a house to give me, Preston, the trust already reclaimed it two days ago," I replied evenly.

"And you don't have custody to surrender, because the family court judge revoked your parental rights yesterday morning."

"Audrey! I am Willa's father! You can't erase my blood from her veins!" Preston screamed in rising hysteria.

Willa leaned close to the phone, her voice steady, calm, and completely devoid of fear or sadness.

"You were never my father, Preston," Willa said clearly into the receiver. "You were just a bad investor who lost everything."

I tapped the red end-call button on the screen, cutting off his frantic screams forever.
