Chapter 5 - The Grandfather's Will

Eleanor collapsed into a nearby dining chair, her silver shawl dragging on the floor as she wept hysterically.

"My money... my father's entire fortune... gone!" Eleanor wailed, pressing her manicured hands against her forehead.

"Marcus, do something!" she begged Marcus Vance, who was staring at Preston with disgust and outrage.

Marcus walked slowly toward the stage, his expression hardened by decades of corporate power struggles.

"There is nothing I can do to protect Preston from criminal prosecution, Eleanor," Marcus announced firmly.

"What your son did constitutes grand larceny, wire fraud, and breach of fiduciary duty against the family trust."

Marcus then turned his gaze toward my father, who was standing tall beside the AV platform with a victorious smirk.

"However," Marcus continued, pulling a folded legal document from his breast pocket, "there is another matter."

"When Eleanor's father established the Hargrove Trust forty years ago, he included a specific moral conduct codicil."

Eleanor looked up, her red-rimmed eyes widening in sudden, panicked realization of what Marcus was about to say.

"The trust stipulates that if any direct heir engages in financial fraud or abandons their lawful offspring, their rights are forfeited."

Marcus unfolded the parchment, his voice echoing across the silent room with constitutional authority.

"All remaining principal, real estate holdings, and corporate voting shares transfer immediately to the next living descendant."

Preston scrambled forward on his knees, clutching at Marcus's trousers like a desperate beggar on the street.

"No, Marcus, that's impossible! I am the only male heir! I am the head of this family!" Preston cried hysterically.

Marcus pulled his leg away in disgust, looking down at Preston as if he were a piece of garbage on the sidewalk.

"The trust document never specified gender, Preston," Marcus said with cold, deliberate satisfaction.

"It specified lawful, biological descendants of sound character and demonstrated loyalty to the family estate."

Marcus turned toward the stage, offering a respectful, formal bow to my ten-year-old daughter Willa.

"As of tonight, by virtue of Preston's gross breach of fiduciary duty, Willa Hargrove is the sole legal beneficiary."

The ballroom exploded into frantic whispers and stunned murmurs of awe at the poetic justice of the revelation.

Eleanor gasped, clutching the edge of the dining table as she stared at the granddaughter she had neglected for a decade.

"Willa?" Eleanor choked out, her voice cracked with despair. "A ten-year-old child controls everything?"

"Her legal guardian controls the voting proxy and the assets until she reaches the age of twenty-five," Marcus clarified.

Marcus turned his eyes directly toward me, nodding his head with immense professional and personal respect.

"That guardian, under the explicit terms of the original charter, is her mother, Audrey Hargrove."

Preston let out a strangled, pathetic groan, collapsing face-first onto the patterned carpet of the ballroom floor.

Sabrina made a sudden dash for the exit doors, grabbing Julian's arm to drag him out into the night.

Before she could reach the double brass handles, the doors were violently shoved open from the outside.
