Chapter 3 - The Broken Mask

The atmospheric pressure inside the ballroom plummeted as murmurs swelled into a roar of outraged condemnation.
Eleanor dropped her hands from Julian's shoulders as if the child had suddenly caught fire.
"Twenty-four million dollars?" Eleanor choked out, clutching her chest as her face drained of all color.
"Preston, tell me this is a sick joke, tell me this isn't my father's endowment fund!" she screamed across the hall.
Preston's face morphed from arrogant superiority into pure, naked panic as sweat began beading along his forehead.
"Mother, listen to me, it's an investment strategy, it was designed to protect our assets from taxes!" Preston lied desperately.
Sabrina's smug expression had completely deteriorated into a look of cornered, feral hostility.
"Turn that damn screen off!" Sabrina shrieked at the technician, lunging toward the AV table herself.
Two female guests stepped into the aisle, blocking Sabrina from reaching the electronics and forcing her backward.
Willa pressed a button on the remote control, and the screen transitioned smoothly to a series of high-resolution photographs.
They were surveillance photos taken outside a luxury high-rise condominium in downtown Miami, dated two weeks prior.
In the images, Sabrina was not kissing Preston or waiting devotedly for his clandestine arrival.
She was wrapped intimately in the arms of another man, a man whose face sent another violent shockwave through the crowd.
The man on the screen was Thomas Sterling, Preston's fiercest corporate rival and the disgraced former CFO of Hargrove Holdings.
"Sabrina... what is Thomas doing in our penthouse?" Preston asked, his voice cracking like brittle glass.
Sabrina backed away toward the ballroom's exit doors, her eyes darting frantically across the crowded room.
Willa advanced the slide once more, displaying a legal document that silenced every single whispering voice in the hall.
It was a certified clinical laboratory report from Quest Diagnostics, stamped with an official chain of custody seal.
The header displayed Julian Lowell's legal name, alongside a comparative DNA analysis against Preston Hargrove.
Willa leaned into the microphone, her clear young voice slicing through the thick air like a razor blade.
"The probability of paternity between Preston Hargrove and Julian Lowell is zero point zero percent," Willa read aloud.
A thunderous gasp erupted from the one hundred and twenty guests, followed by instant, unrestrained mockery.
"Zero percent?" someone laughed from the back row, the sound cutting through Preston like a physical blow.
Preston spun around to face Sabrina, his eyes bloodshot, his hands trembling violently at his sides.
"You told me he was mine!" Preston roared, the veins in his neck bulging as his voice echoed off the high ceiling.
"You swore on your life that Julian was my son, that he was the boy I needed to secure the family legacy!"
Sabrina's mask of elegance shattered completely, replaced by a cold, venomous sneer of utter contempt.
"Did you really think a pathetic, insecure weakling like you could produce an heir on your own?" Sabrina spat venomously.
"You were so desperate to prove your mother wrong that you handed me millions without checking a single receipt!"
The three-year-old boy began to cry, frightened by the shouting, but Eleanor backed away from him in sheer disgust.
"Get that bastard child away from me!" Eleanor shrieked, wiping her hands on her dress as if contaminated.

My heart broke slightly for the innocent boy, but for Preston and Sabrina, my heart felt nothing but stone-cold satisfaction.
Preston stumbled backward, his knees buckling under the catastrophic weight of public humiliation and financial ruin.
