Chapter 6 - THE MISTRESS'S MISCALCULATION

The tension in the ballroom was palpable, thick enough to slice with a scalpel. After delivering her whispered threat, Elena seamlessly pivoted back to the crowd, leaving Ryan standing frozen by the ice sculpture like a man who had just realized he was standing on a landmine.

Vanessa, watching from the periphery, felt the icy grip of panic tighten around her chest. The plan was supposed to be simple. Ryan promised her a life of unimaginable luxury. He promised her that Elena was a weak, coddled heiress who would crumble under pressure, leaving her family's empire ripe for the taking. But the woman in the crimson gown holding court across the room was not weak. She was a predator.

Unable to contain her anxiety, Vanessa abandoned her post and cornered Ryan in the dimly lit hallway leading to the restrooms.

"What did she say to you?" Vanessa demanded, her voice a harsh, desperate hiss. "Why is she here? You told me she was broken!"

Ryan ran a trembling hand through his perfectly styled hair, his eyes darting around wildly. "Keep your voice down, Vanessa. She knows. She knows something is wrong. We need to accelerate the timeline. I’ll trigger the proxy vote clause on Monday claiming emotional distress."

"Emotional distress?" Vanessa scoffed, her facade of superiority cracking. "She's out there charming the entire board of directors! She looks like she could run for governor! No judge is going to grant you conservatorship based on that performance."

"I will handle it!" Ryan snapped, his charming mask completely falling away to reveal the desperate coward underneath. "Just go back to the hotel. You being here is a liability right now."

Vanessa stepped back, as if she had been slapped. The realization hit her with the force of a freight train. She wasn't a partner in his grand scheme. She was a tool. A pawn he was willing to sacrifice the moment the board shifted.

"You promised me," she whispered, her hands shaking. "You promised me that if I pushed her, if I made her break down in public, it would give you the leverage you needed."

"And you failed!" Ryan hissed viciously. "You pushed her, and instead of breaking, she went to her lawyers. Now get out of here before you ruin everything."

He turned on his heel and stormed back toward the ballroom. Vanessa stood alone in the quiet hallway, the ambient music of the gala mocking her. She looked down at her own stomach. The pregnancy she had weaponized just a day prior suddenly felt like an anchor dragging her down into the abyss.

She pulled her phone from her clutch, her hands shaking violently. If Ryan was going to throw her to the wolves to save his own skin, she was not going to go down quietly. She navigated to her contacts, scrolling past Ryan's name, and stopped on a number she had acquired weeks ago during a moment of profound paranoia.

It was the direct line to Arthur Sterling, Elena's attorney.

Vanessa took a deep breath, the sheer instinct of self-preservation overriding her greed. She pressed call. The phone rang twice before a deep, smooth voice answered.

"Mr. Sterling," Vanessa said, her voice trembling but resolute. "My name is Vanessa. I believe we have mutual interests to discuss. And I have the offshore account numbers you’re looking for."
