Chapter 2 - THE ECHO OF A HEARTBEAT

The sterile, antiseptic smell of the emergency room was a sharp contrast to the suffocating heat of the parking lot, yet Elena found it equally hard to breathe. She lay on the crisp, white examination paper, her eyes fixed blindly on the flickering fluorescent light above. The physical pain in her scraped hands and bruised hip was entirely eclipsed by the psychological hemorrhage occurring in her chest.

Martha stood like a sentinel by the door, her posture rigid, her eyes burning with a maternal fury that could have incinerated the entire hospital wing. Ryan had attempted to follow them into the ambulance, stammering apologies that sounded like broken glass. Martha had practically physically barred him from entering, threatening to have the police arrest him for accessory to assault if he took another step.

"The gel is going to be cold," Dr. Aris murmured gently, breaking the silence. She squeezed the clear ultrasound gel onto Elena’s trembling abdomen.

Elena squeezed her eyes shut. Please, she prayed to a god she hadn't spoken to in years. Please let my baby be okay. Take everything else. Take the marriage, take my pride, but leave me this.

The doctor moved the transducer across her skin. The silence in the room stretched until it felt like a physical weight pressing down on Elena’s windpipe. And then, it filled the room.

Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

The rapid, steady rhythm of the fetal heartbeat echoed through the small speaker. It was the most beautiful, defiant sound Elena had ever heard. A sob, violent and uncontainable, tore its way up her throat. She covered her face with her uninjured hand, the tears she had refused to shed in the parking lot finally breaking free.

"The baby is perfectly fine, Elena," Dr. Aris said, offering a warm, reassuring smile. "Your amniotic fluid levels are normal, no signs of placental abruption. You protected the impact beautifully. You're going to be a little bruised, but your child is safe."

Martha exhaled a shaky breath and stepped forward, grasping Elena’s free hand. "Thank God," she whispered, kissing her daughter’s knuckles.

As the doctor left to prepare the discharge papers, the emotional adrenaline began to fade, leaving Elena in a state of hyper-lucid clarity. She wiped her tears, her expression hardening. The woman who had been shoved to the ground was gone.

"Mom," Elena said, her voice devoid of its usual warmth. It was flat, clinical, and chillingly precise.

"I'm here, sweetheart. We're going straight to my house. He will never come near you again."

"No," Elena replied, sitting up slowly, ignoring the protest of her bruised muscles. "We are going back to the penthouse. I need to secure my laptop, the safe, and the security footage from the building lobby for the past six months. Ryan thinks I am going to crumble. He thinks I am the fragile, pregnant wife who will weep and beg for an explanation."

Martha looked at her daughter, seeing the sudden, terrifying resemblance to Elena’s late father—a man who had built a billion-dollar empire by destroying anyone who underestimated him.

"He promised a mistress he would leave me before the baby was born," Elena continued, swinging her legs over the edge of the bed. "He wanted to blindside me. He wanted to secure his position in my family's company before he dropped the bomb."

She looked at her mother, her eyes dark and resolved. "I’m not going to just leave him, Mom. I am going to obliterate him."
