Chapter 3 - THE PENTHOUSE PURGE

The ride up the private elevator to the Manhattan penthouse felt like ascending to a crime scene. Elena stood leaning against the mirrored wall, watching the digital numbers tick upward. Fifty-two. Fifty-three. Fifty-four. Every floor represented a lie. The vacations to St. Barts, the anniversary dinners at Le Bernardin, the whispered promises in the dark—all of it had been a meticulously constructed facade to mask Ryan's ultimate betrayal.
The elevator doors slid open to reveal their sprawling, minimalist apartment. It was quiet. The panoramic views of the city skyline offered no comfort; they merely highlighted the cold emptiness of the space.
"Lock the private elevator access," Elena instructed Martha, stepping into the foyer and kicking off her ruined sandals. "Change the security codes on the front door. If he tries to enter, the concierge has strict orders to call the police and report a trespasser."
Martha immediately went to the smart-home control panel on the wall, her fingers flying across the screen. "Done. He's locked out of the castle."
Elena didn't waste a second. She walked straight to Ryan’s home office. The room smelled of his expensive cedarwood cologne and deceit. She powered on his desktop computer. Thanks to a shared network setting she had insisted on for "convenience" a year ago, she bypassed his initial passcode.
What she found over the next three hours made the betrayal in the parking lot pale in comparison.
Ryan hadn't just been sleeping with Vanessa. Vanessa was a mid-level accountant at one of the subsidiary firms owned by Elena’s family. And Ryan, who served as the Vice President of Acquisitions, had been using her access to quietly siphon funds into a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands.
"Mom, look at this," Elena said, her voice remarkably steady as she pointed to a spreadsheet hidden deep within a nested folder.
Martha leaned over the mahogany desk, adjusting her reading glasses. As a board member of the company, she read financial statements the way other people read the morning news. The color drained from her face.
"He's been embezzling," Martha whispered, the shock giving way to a volcanic rage. "He's been bleeding the commercial real estate division for over a year. Nearly four million dollars."
Elena leaned back in the leather chair, her hands resting on her pregnant belly. The puzzle pieces snapped into place with sickening clarity. "That’s why he promised to leave me before the baby was born. My trust fund explicitly states that upon the birth of my first child, my shares in the company double, and my husband is granted proxy voting rights if I take maternity leave."
He didn't just want a divorce. He wanted to execute a corporate coup. He planned to use his proxy votes to cover up the embezzlement, finalize a massive buyout with a rival firm, and walk away with a golden parachute and his mistress, leaving Elena and her child financially paralyzed.
"He thought I was too busy picking out nursery paint colors to notice he was stealing my empire," Elena said, a cold, humorless smile touching her lips. She pulled a flash drive from her purse and began downloading every single file.
"What's our next move?" Martha asked, pulling out her phone. "I can have the board convene an emergency session tonight. We can have him escorted out by security tomorrow morning."
May you like
"No," Elena said sharply, pulling the flash drive free. "If we fire him now, he'll hide the offshore accounts. He’ll play the victim. We don't just want him fired, Mom. We want him in a federal penitentiary."
She picked up her phone and dialed a number she hadn't used since her father's estate planning. "Call Arthur Sterling. Tell him I need him at the penthouse in an hour. It's time to go to war."
