Chapter 14 - THE SENTENCING

Six months later, the federal courthouse in lower Manhattan was swarming with reporters, camera crews, and curious onlookers. The trial of Ryan Thomas had been a media spectacle, a modern-day morality play about greed, betrayal, and the spectacular downfall of a corporate prince.

Elena did not attend the trial. She had no desire to see Ryan, no need to subject herself to his desperate, pathetic attempts to garner sympathy on the stand. She had given her deposition via sworn video testimony, her words cool, factual, and utterly devastating.

She sat in the sunlit living room of her penthouse, bouncing a healthy, robust six-month-old Clara on her knee. The baby cooed, reaching for a brightly colored plush toy, completely unaware of the dramatic climax occurring across the city.

Arthur Sterling sat on the velvet sofa across from them, his phone resting on the glass coffee table, connected to a live audio feed from the courtroom.

"The jury is back," Arthur announced, leaning forward, his eyes gleaming with the anticipation of a predator about to watch the final kill.

The courtroom audio crackled through the speaker. The judge's voice, stern and uncompromising, echoed in the quiet penthouse.

"Ryan Thomas, on the counts of federal wire fraud, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit embezzlement, this jury finds you guilty on all charges."

A faint gasp—Ryan’s voice—could be heard through the feed, followed by the frantic whispering of his court-appointed attorney.

"Given the egregious breach of trust, the manipulation of corporate assets, and the sheer audacity of your crimes," the judge continued, "I sentence you to eighteen years in federal prison, without the possibility of parole for a minimum of fourteen years. You are hereby ordered to pay full restitution to the Vance Corporation."

The sound of the gavel slamming down resonated with finality.

Arthur reached forward and disconnected the call. He looked at Elena, waiting for her reaction.

Elena didn't cheer. She didn't gloat. She simply kissed the top of baby Clara’s head, inhaling the sweet, powdery scent of her daughter.

"Eighteen years," Arthur said softly. "By the time he gets out, he will be an old man with no money, no connections, and no future."

"He got what he deserved," Elena said, her voice peaceful. "He chose his path the moment he shoved me in that parking lot. I just made sure he reached the destination."

Arthur stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. "My work here is done, Elena. It has been the absolute privilege of my career to watch you dismantle that man."

"Thank you, Arthur," Elena smiled, offering him a handshake. "For everything."

As Arthur left the penthouse, the silence that remained was not empty or cold. It was the warm, golden silence of a summer afternoon. The storm was officially over. The wreckage had been cleared away. The sky was finally, beautifully clear.
