Chapter 9 - THE DEPOSITION

The conference room in Arthur Sterling’s office felt less like a legal setting and more like an execution chamber. The blinds were drawn against the glaring Thursday afternoon sun, casting the room in a cool, unforgiving fluorescent light.
Ryan sat at the defense table, his lawyer—a slick, overpriced defense attorney named Vance—whispering urgently into his ear. Ryan looked exhausted but arrogant, unaware that the ground beneath him had completely eroded. He believed this deposition was merely a formality, a desperate attempt by Elena’s lawyers to salvage a failing divorce negotiation before he took over the company tomorrow.
Elena sat directly across from him. Despite the agonizing Braxton Hicks contractions that had kept her awake all night, she looked flawless. Her armor was a tailored black maternity suit; her weapon was absolute, terrifying composure.
Arthur Sterling clicked his pen, the sound sharp like a gunshot in the quiet room. "State your name for the record."
"Ryan Thomas," he replied, a condescending smirk playing on his lips. "And can we expedite this, Arthur? My wife is clearly unwell, and the stress of these baseless accusations is terrible for the baby."
Elena didn't flinch at the weaponization of her unborn child. She simply stared at him, her eyes as cold as deep space.
"Let's discuss the Vance Corporation accounts, specifically the offshore subsidiary labeled 'Aethelgard Holdings'," Arthur began, sliding a thick ledger across the table. "Can you explain why 4.2 million dollars was diverted into this account over the last fourteen months under your authorization?"
Ryan’s lawyer intervened. "Objection. My client is the VP of Acquisitions. He moves capital daily. This is standard corporate restructuring."
"Restructuring?" Arthur raised an eyebrow. "Into a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands? A company whose sole proprietary officer is listed under a pseudonym linked directly to your mother's maiden name, Mr. Thomas?"
Ryan’s smirk faltered slightly, but he held his ground. "You have no proof of that. The authorization codes required to move that kind of capital require dual authentication. You're grasping at straws, Arthur."
"Dual authentication," Arthur repeated slowly, savoring the moment. "You mean, your authorization code, and the authorization code of a senior accountant?"
"Exactly," Ryan said, leaning back, confident he had covered his tracks.
The door to the conference room opened.
Vanessa walked in.
Ryan’s entire body went rigid. The color drained from his face so quickly he looked as though he might pass out. His lawyer looked confused, glancing between his client and the woman entering the room.
Vanessa didn't look at Ryan. She walked directly to the empty chair next to Arthur, sitting down and placing a silver flash drive on the table.
"Ms. Vanessa," Arthur said smoothly, turning on the audio recorder. "For the record, can you confirm your role in the diversion of these funds?"
Ryan shot up from his chair. "What is this? Vanessa, what are you doing here?"
"Sit down, Mr. Thomas," Arthur commanded, his voice echoing with absolute authority.
Vanessa looked at the flash drive, her hands trembling, before finally raising her eyes to meet Ryan’s. The illusion of their romance, the lies he had spun to manipulate her, all of it shattered in the sterile light of the room.

"I authorized the transfers," Vanessa said, her voice clear into the microphone. "Under the explicit, coerced direction of Ryan Thomas. He promised me that if I helped him drain the company accounts, he would leave his wife, frame her for mental incompetence, and run away with me."
Ryan fell back into his chair, the breath knocked completely out of him. The walls of his meticulously constructed empire were collapsing, burying him alive in a tomb of his own making.
