Chapter 10 - THE FRIDAY MORNING COUP

Friday morning dawned over Manhattan with a suffocating, heavy humidity, a precursor to a violent summer storm. Inside the glass-walled boardroom of the Vance Corporation, the atmosphere was equally volatile.
The emergency board meeting had been called for 9:00 AM. Ryan arrived at 8:45, his bespoke suit unable to hide the sheer panic radiating from his pores. The devastating deposition the day before had left him with only one, desperate option: he had to execute the corporate coup immediately. If he could secure the proxy votes and push through the buyout before the FBI could act on Vanessa's evidence, he could vanish with the liquid capital.
He stood at the head of the massive mahogany table, addressing the twelve men and women who controlled the destiny of the empire Elena's father had built.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Ryan began, projecting a false, heavy-hearted confidence. "We are facing a crisis of leadership. As you know, my wife, Elena, is currently battling severe pregnancy-related psychological distress. Her absence today is a tragic testament to her inability to manage her duties."
An uneasy murmur rippled through the older board members. Ryan pressed his advantage, leaning forward.
"To protect the legacy of this company, I am invoking the emergency proxy clause in her trust. I am asking for an immediate vote to grant me temporary conservatorship of her shares, allowing us to finalize the merger with Apex Industries and secure our financial future."
He had the votes. He had spent months wining and dining the old guard, planting seeds of doubt about Elena's emotional stability. He watched the chairman raise his hand to call for the vote. Victory, however fleeting, was inches away.
Then, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding crack.
Every head turned.
Elena walked in.
She was not the fragile, broken woman Ryan had painted her to be. She was dressed in a razor-sharp white blazer, her dark hair pulled back severely, exposing a face carved from absolute determination. She walked with a slow, deliberate grace, though every step sent a shockwave of pain through her lower abdomen as another contraction gripped her body. She refused to let it show.
Behind her walked Martha, carrying a thick stack of manila folders, and Arthur Sterling, flanked by two men wearing dark suits and federal badges.
"There will be no vote today, Ryan," Elena’s voice cut through the silent room like a diamond slicing glass.
Ryan backed away from the table, his eyes wide with animalistic terror. "You... you shouldn't be here. You're unwell."
"The only sickness in this company is you," Elena said, stepping up to the table. She didn't look at him; she looked directly at the board members.
Martha dropped the manila folders onto the polished wood. They landed with a heavy, definitive thud.
"Inside those folders," Elena announced, her voice unwavering despite the agonizing tightening in her stomach, "is irrefutable proof of massive corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and conspiracy, orchestrated by Ryan Thomas over the last fourteen months."
The boardroom erupted into chaos. Board members snatched up the folders, their eyes scanning the damning financial records, the offshore account details, and the signed affidavit from Vanessa.
"This is a lie!" Ryan screamed, his facade completely shattering. He lunged toward the table, desperate to grab the papers, but the two federal agents stepped forward, blocking his path.
"Ryan Thomas," the lead agent said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud and grand larceny."
The sound of the handcuffs clicking around Ryan's wrists echoed through the boardroom, the sweetest, most vindicating music Elena had ever heard. She watched as the man who had promised to destroy her was marched out of the room, stripped of his power, his dignity, and his freedom.
As the doors closed behind him, the adrenaline that had kept Elena standing finally evaporated. A massive, breathtaking contraction ripped through her. She gasped, her knees buckling.
"Elena!" Martha cried, rushing forward to catch her daughter before she hit the floor.
May you like
Elena gripped her mother's arm, her water breaking in a sudden rush onto the hardwood floor of the boardroom. She looked up, a fierce, exhausted smile breaking across her face.
"The company is safe, Mom," Elena whispered, her breathing ragged. "Now, it's time to meet my daughter."
